Location: VA Boston Healthcare System – Jamaica Plain, Brockton, and West Roxbury Campuses
Schedule: Days, Evenings and Nights Available, 8 hour shifts (No On-Call)
Position OverviewThe Medical Technician (Phlebotomist) provides essential laboratory services in support of Veteran care within the VA Boston Healthcare System. This role is responsible for performing high-quality phlebotomy, specimen collection, and processing for inpatient, outpatient, and Emergency Department (ED) settings. The position supports the VA’s mission by delivering safe, accurate, and patient-centered laboratory services in accordance with national and VA standards.
Experience & Certification- Minimum of three (3) years of recent phlebotomy experience
- Certification through ASCP or AMT
- Active BLS/ACLS
- Perform phlebotomy for inpatients (including ward rounds), outpatients, and ED patients
- Deliver care in a professional, patient-centered manner to ensure comfort and satisfaction
- Execute STAT, ASAP, and timed blood draws accurately
- Process specimens for testing and send-outs, including preparation and handling
- Maintain specimen integrity through proper labeling, centrifugation, decanting, and aliquoting
- Positively identify patients and specimens prior to collection, testing, or aliquoting
- Adhere to CLSI standards
, VA policies, and national laboratory best practices
- Document all patient care activities in accordance with VHA standards
- Safeguard all electronic and paper patient information per HIPAA and VA privacy policies
- Participate in monthly Laboratory Quality Improvement and Laboratory Staff meetings (approximately 2 hours total per month)
- Communicate effectively with laboratory staff, clinicians, and leadership to resolve collection or processing issues
- Current ACLS/BLS certification (4 hours of annual training required)
- Completion of all VA-required education, including:
- VA Privacy & Information Security Training
- HIPAA-focused training
Documentation verifying current competency, skills, and any required licensure
- Day shift only
, 8.5-hour shifts (includes lunch) - Start times may include:
- 5:30 AM, 6:00 AM, 6:30 AM, 7:00 AM, 7:30 AM, 8:00 AM, or 8:30 AM
- May be required to work weekends, holidays, and overtime
- No on-call or standby duties
- Directly support the healthcare needs of U.S. Veterans
- Provide high-impact, patient-centered care in a respected federal healthcare system
