Job Summary

On physician order and per established procedures, an orthopedic technician applies, alters, and/or removes casts, splints, orthotics, bed traction/suspension equipment, and designated orthopedic equipment for inpatient and ambulatory clinic patients. The staff orthopedic technician is responsible for complying with hospital and department procedures, which include but are not limited to confidentiality, safety, infection control, documentation, and charging.

Job Description

The Rehabilitation Services Department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, and orthopedic technician services to patients on a consult basis to those on our inpatient floors, outpatient clinics, ICUs, and the Emergency Department. Brigham and Women’s Hospital is a nationally ranked academic medical center located in the Longwood Medical Area of Boston, Massachusetts.

Orthopedic technicians will have opportunities for clinical growth through internal continuing education programming as well as financial support for external continuing education courses and conferences. Orthopedic technicians can also participate in various Rehabilitation Department Committees to enhance their professional growth. Opportunities to advance on our established merit‑based clinical ladder allow technicians to be recognized for their clinical, scholarly, and service contributions and accomplishments.

Qualifications

Education
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
Licenses and Credentials
  • BLS Certification (Basic Life Support).
  • Preferred:
    Orthopaedic Technologist Certification (OTC) – National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists, Inc.
Experience
  • Related patient care experience 2‑3 years preferred.
  • Experience in orthopedics 0‑1 year preferred.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of standard orthopedic procedures and practices.
  • Working knowledge of orthopedic devices and appliances and proper fitting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology pertaining to orthopedics use.
  • Ability to communicate effectively when instructing patients in the use and care of orthopedic devices and appliances.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff.
  • Be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.
