Overview
Position Summary:
Customer service liaison for the first impression of the medical center. Greets patients, obtains demographical information, collects regulatory data (HIPAA, Medicare, Mass Pro, JACHO, DPH, EMTALA, Subscriber, Health Care Proxy), obtains signatures from patients, and provides regulatory paperwork. Ensures insurance eligibility and collects copays. Identifies the patient through the EMPI search and re-verifies with the patient (including re-verification when a bracelet is placed).
Prints appropriate paperwork and escorts patients to the location. Answers phones and contributes to quality checks of registrations. Assists hospital departments in accurate patient registration so others can perform their functions. Handles day-to-day bed placement for scheduled, urgent, and emergency admissions, including admission, transfer, discharge, and death procedures. Works closely with scheduling and precertification areas within Patient Access.

- Provide superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers, and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards.
- Obtain accurate patient information and enter into the Meditech computer system.
- Verify and update all demographical information (date of birth, address, maiden name, social security number).
- Verify and update all insurance information and check eligibility according to policies.
- Document accurate reason for visit and physicians (primary care, attending, referring).
- Record accurate locations, status, services, and occurrence codes.
- Obtain all regulatory data (Health Care Proxy/advance directives, HIPAA notices, Medicare questions, etc.).
- Respect confidentiality at all times and ensure consent of treatment documents are obtained where required.
- Verify insurance in the computer and obtain signatures according to policies.
- Obtain general consent for treatment and HIPAA receipt of privacy notice; handle financial releases.
- Perform daily quality checks on registrations and run revenue logs; pass results to assigned lead.
- Assign beds according to service and diagnosis; maintain current census and admission log.
- Perform transfers and activations in a timely manner and be familiar with death procedures and related reporting (including death certificates and death logs).
- Cross-train to several areas of Patient Access and assume front desk responsibilities as needed.
- Follow all departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensure area is stocked for the next shift.
- Clean printers, faxes, and work area at end of shift; remove confidential papers to recycle as appropriate.
- Monitor and replenish supplies; report low inventory to supervisor.
Minimum Education:
High School Graduate or G.E.D. Some College preferred.
Minimum Experience:
2-4 years in a health care setting with medical terminology and registration/check-in experience preferred. Insurance knowledge preferred.
Minimum Skills/Abilities:
Ability to multitask; excellent customer service and communication skills.
Compensation Range: $20.70 - $30.76 per hour. This range is an estimate based on minimum qualifications; final offer considers education, experience, and certifications. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, pharmacy, retirement plans, paid time off, and career advancement opportunities.
