Position: Respiratory Therapist-(Nights, 7pm-7am) - $15k Sign On Bonus

Position Summary

Provides Respiratory Care services in accordance with department policies. Administers, monitors, controls and evaluates complex life support systems that ventilate acute or chronically ill patients. Participates in hospital initiatives and projects. $15,000 Sign On Bonus (external candidates only).

Essential Responsibilities / Duties

Conducts Respiratory Care services according to department policy and procedure, as assigned, to ensure the quality of care provided to patients. Reviews the patient chart and accurately interprets the physician’s orders. Sets up appropriate equipment and medication as needed for each test and therapy treatment, observes and documents procedures, and administers all tests, treatments and therapy as ordered. Therapy includes oxygen administration, humidity therapy, airway management, resuscitation mechanical ventilation, and EKG testing.

Documents every patient treatment administered in patient charts and notes response to therapy. Delivers, sets up, and safely operates mechanical ventilators and monitors patients receiving mechanical ventilation. Performs endotracheal suctioning and tracheal suctioning as needed. These standards are reviewed by supervisory observation and hospital documentation. Makes patient rounds according to assigned department schedules, observes patient condition, checks operation of equipment, and makes adjustments as necessary.

Resolves problems and discontinues therapy as ordered. Removes equipment from patient rooms, disassembles equipment following departmental policies. Recognizes medical problems such as adverse reactions to therapy, discontinues treatment if indicated, and notifies physician immediately. Applies emergency protocols as needed and alerts Respiratory Care supervisor. Assists physicians with establishment and maintenance of patient airway in the event of a cardiac arrest.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to age groups ranging from neo‑natal to geriatric patients. Notifies supervisor when patients in age groups not regularly served are present, and seeks assistance from specialists. Performs advanced Respiratory Therapy assignments, attends collaborative clinical committees, assists in protocol development, provides in‑service education, and participates in quality improvement activities. Completes Advanced Cardiac Life Support, assists with bronchoscopy and pulmonary function testing, performs tracheotomy tube changes and arterial blood gas punctures, analyzes blood gas samples, reports results, performs endotracheal intubation, and maintains clinical competency in Respiratory Care.

Job Requirements

Education: Complete a two‑year AMA approved program in Respiratory Care before start date.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Required:

Current Massachusetts license as a Respiratory Therapist, registration by the National Board of Respiratory Care, and BLS certification before start date.

Experience: Two years Respiratory Therapist experience preferred; new graduates welcome to apply.

Knowledge and

Skills:

Knowledge of basic medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pulmonary physics, pulmonary pathophysiology, advanced respiratory care, mathematics, blood gas chemistry, pharmacology, ability to read and communicate in English, prioritization and teamwork skills, interpersonal and communication skills, caring and sympathetic attitude, basic computer proficiency, discretion with confidential information, and physical ability to meet job demands.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation Range: $41.52 – $55.88 per hour, based on minimum job qualifications.
