Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Breast Imaging Manager and Lead Breast Imaging Technologist, the Ultrasound Technologist generates diagnostic sonographic images for radiologists and implements department policies and procedures as directed.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Perform a wide variety of exams required for proper departmental workflow.
  • Assist physicians during sterile invasive procedures such as biopsies, aspirations, thoracenteses, and intraoperative procedures.
  • Cover the department as needed under direction of Manager or Lead Technologist.
  • Prepare exam rooms and ultrasound equipment in line with infection control, sterilization, and patient safety protocols.
  • Complete exams promptly while ensuring high‑quality scans for radiology and outside departments.
  • Prepare patients for exams and maintain patient comfort and modesty at all times.
  • Assume responsibility for patient safety during the sonographic exam.
  • Follow all department‑established policies and procedures.
  • Set up equipment and use proper patient positioning and technique to ensure comfort and prevent data acquisition issues or musculoskeletal injury.
  • Perform duties across all campuses, including both ultrasound and other appropriate areas as required.
  • Adhere to scheduled hours or overtime as needed for department operations.
  • Conduct appropriate studies as specified by policy and procedure.
  • Ensure requisitions reflect the appropriate study for each patient.
  • Verify that requested exams match patient condition and history and request additional information when needed.
  • Identify and document any limitations to the sonographic exam.
  • Collaborate with radiologists to provide required views, films, and additional techniques as requested.
  • Provide service and care to patients of all ages.
  • Maintain equipment in collaboration with management and service vendors to maximize uptime and minimize costs.
  • Keep exam rooms clean, tidy, and ready for use.
  • Follow high‑level disinfection policies and procedures.
  • Deliver patient‑focused customer service and uphold standards of care.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, aligning language with their level of understanding.
  • Handle telephone calls and service requests professionally.
  • Treat patients and staff with dignity and respect; report problems to the manager.
  • Adapt schedules to accommodate patient and staffing needs.
  • Provide patients with accurate information on reports as required.
  • Minimize patient discussions about departmental matters and prevent inappropriate behavior.
  • Monitor patient condition and, when needed, involve nursing or other assistance for optimal patient care.
  • Operate electronic systems (PACS, RIS, Epic, etc.) competently.
  • Ensure proper documentation: requisitions, procedural completion, insurance/billing records.
  • Apply hospital values to decision‑making and support the division’s mission.
  • Follow hospital infection control and safety protocols.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.
  • Adhere to BMC’s RESPECT behavioral standards.
Job Requirements

Education: Associate’s degree in diagnostic medical sonography or equivalent certificate program obtained prior to hire.

Certifications and Licenses: American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) accreditation (OB, AB, or RVT) required prior to hire; one year to obtain OB/GYN accreditation.

Experience: Preferred to have experience in a related clinical area.

Knowledge and

Skills:

Knowledge of ultrasound principles, procedures, equipment operation, and maintenance. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with patients, coworkers, students, and physicians.

Compensation

$48.90 – $62.03 per hour. Compensation influenced by education, experience, licensure, and certifications.
