Orthopedic Technician
Responsible for providing specialized support in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of orthopedic conditions under the direction of the orthopedic surgeon. Train other employees, ensuring that patient care is delivered accurately and efficiently. Assists in the application of casts, braces, splints, and other orthopedic devices, and may also assist in surgical procedures.
Essential Functions- Applies knowledge and skills of cast application, traction set-up and maintenance in carrying out designated responsibilities
- Acts as a resource where expertise is requested in orthopedic devices; may train and provide guidance to other orthopedic technicians
- Plans, implements, and monitors appropriate spending and budget for orthopedic supplies and equipment.
- Collaborates with physicians and nurses regarding the impact of practice or cost and utilization of orthopedic equipment and supplies.
- Collaborates with clinical staff on a ongoing basis regarding orthopedic quality improvement activities and orthopedic improvement.
- Identifies critical indicators which will be used to monitor and evaluate quality.
- Prepares and knows the specific uses of all equipment and supplies used for orthopedic procedures.
Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required
Licenses and Credentials
Basic Life Support [BLS Certification] - Data Conversion - Various Issuers preferred Orthopaedic Technologist Certification [OTC] - National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists, Inc. preferred
Experience
experience working directly in the care of orthopedic patients 3-5 years required

Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of standard orthopedic procedures and practices.
- Strong knowledge of orthopedic devices and appliances and proper fitting.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology pertaining to orthopedics use.
- Communicate effectively when instructing patients in the use and care of orthopedic devices and appliances.
- Maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff.
- Be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.
