Position: Patient Care Tech/PCT – Farr 3, Med/Surg (Per Diem)

Join the team on Farr 3, a 30-bed adult medical-surgical unit dedicated to providing exceptional, patient-centered care to individuals with complex acute and chronic medical conditions. Our patient population includes those with heart failure, COPD, diabetes, sepsis, advanced wound care needs, delirium and dementia, behavioral health and substance use disorders, as well as patients requiring tracheostomy management, chest tubes, and other specialized medical therapies.

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) is an essential member of the interdisciplinary care team who partners closely with registered nurses to provide direct patient care and support daily unit operations. Responsibilities include assisting patients with activities of daily living, obtaining and documenting vital signs, measuring intake and output, performing blood glucose monitoring, obtaining EKGs, assisting with patient mobility and ambulation, maintaining a clean and safe patient environment, and recognizing and promptly communicating changes in patient condition to the nursing team.

Successful PCTs on Farr 3 demonstrate excellent communication and customer service skills, a strong work ethic, accountability, flexibility, and the ability to prioritize competing responsibilities while working collaboratively with nurses, providers, and other members of the healthcare team. Compassion, attention to detail, and a willingness to step in wherever needed are key qualities that contribute to the success of our team.

Diem Commitment

Per diem Patient Care Technicians are required to work a minimum of 16 hours during each four-week scheduling period, including meeting applicable off-shift and holiday scheduling requirements as outlined by department policy.

Job Description Essential Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with a registered nurse on developing a patient's care plan.
  • Develops and maintains competencies as delegated by a registered nurse.
  • Maintains the safety of patients who have been identified at risk for preventable injury by the implementation of nursing safety interventions or the use of protective devices/equipment under the supervision of the registered nurse.
  • Reports all patient activity to the registered nurse in a timely manner.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • 0-1 years related work experience required.
  • Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

    Ability to make decisions that are based on specific instructions, standard practices and established procedures which generally require little or no supervision.
  • Problem Solving:
    Ability to address problems that are routine, somewhat repetitive and generally solved by following clear directions and procedures and by identifying opportunities for process improvements.

    Ability to follow general instructions and procedures as provided. Work is monitored by supervisor/manager.
  • Written Communications:
    Ability to read, and write in English in order to understand basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively with patients, families and other medical center staff; and respond to basic questions.
  • Oral Communications:
    Ability to understand spoken English in order to follow basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively in basic English with patients, families and medical center staff in response to routine questions.
  • Knowledge:
    Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use them in routine situations. Specialized knowledge not required.
  • Team Work:
    Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.
