Senior/Research Clinical Veterinarian, NEIDL, LASC Per Diem

The Senior/Research Clinical Veterinarian role supports the Animal Science Center (ASC) at Boston University with primary responsibility to the Animal Research Services (ARS) unit at NEIDL (National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories). The research veterinarian is responsible for clinical and study support for the ABSL-2/-3/-4 animal core at the National Emerging Infectious Disease Laboratories (NEIDL). This includes providing clinical oversight/support for research animal care and use, medicine, disease diagnosis and experimental techniques for PIs doing ABSL-3 and
-4 research in the NEIDL. The research clinical veterinarian advises IACUC, ensuring that research activities are compliant with federal, state and local regulatory policies, laws and regulations that are relevant to animal care and welfare. This position reports to the Attending Veterinarian and Director of the Animal Science Center (ASC). As part of the Animal Science Center, the research clinical veterinarian provides clinical and regulatory oversight and technical study support for animals housed for biomedical research at Boston University.

This position will be part of the ASC vet on-call program and may be called in to support specific projects that would benefit from veterinary participation outside of the NEIDL.

Required Skills
  • Veterinary degree (DVM/VMD) from an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine or ECFVG (Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates) certification with post-graduate work experience at a ACLAM-recognized laboratory animal medicine training program or equivalent Licensure to practice veterinary medicine within the US ACLAM boarded or board eligible preferred.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated knowledge and experience in rodent and non-human primate models of infectious diseases at ABSL-3 and
    -4 levels that include dosing, sampling and capturing physiological or clinical pathology data measurements.
  • Multi-tasking and ability to work synergistically with other stakeholders including EHS, Facilities, ROHP, Security and Investigators.
  • Must meet requirements and qualifications to assume delegated program responsibility in NEIDL.
  • Must meet requirements and qualifications for the Personnel Suitability and Reliability Program including DOJ/FBI background checks and SRA clearance in order to handle select agents and work in the biocontainment environment.
  • Must be willing to participate in a medical health surveillance program and be able to wear a protective level A suit.
  • Manage duties outside of NEIDL biocontainment as assigned such as weekend duty rotation.
  • Participate in ASC managerial and strategic initiatives as led by ASC Director.

The National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) is part of a national network of secure facilities that study infectious diseases – whether they occur naturally or are introduced deliberately through bioterrorism. The NEIDL is dedicated to the development of diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics to combat emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. In addition to Bio Safety Level (BSL)-2 and BSL-3 laboratories, the NEIDL houses BSL-4 laboratories that will operate at the highest level of containment.

The NEIDL will add to the growing life sciences industry in the region, throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and across the country.
