Position Summary
The RD is part of a multidisciplinary team with a Pediatrician and Social Worker. The Grow Clinic is an outpatient specialty clinic for infants and children diagnosed with Failure to Thrive (FTT). Each week is comprised of clinic sessions at BMC and follow-up. Home visiting is an important piece of follow-up for the Grow Clinic model. BMC serves a racially and ethnically diverse patient population.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties- Provides nutritional care to patients seen in outpatient specialty clinics with organic and non-organic failure-to-thrive conditions;
Interviews patients to obtain information regarding food habits for guidance in planning diet; assesses nutritional status based on laboratory values, medical and nutritional history and medical/surgical condition; develops nutritional care plans based on this information in accordance with accepted AND (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) standards of practice and written department protocols. - Instructs primary care takers on the preparation of formula. Instructs patients and their families, singularly and in groups, regarding diet therapy i.e., the principle of nutrition, the purpose and use of diet, food selection and preparation, and adopting food plans to individual needs. Uses the ADIME format (assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring, and evaluation) to document this in patient’s medical charts; develops and plans individual diet including necessary supplements and tube feedings;
Maintains record of all patients seen and recommended therapeutic action. - Monitors patients to determine changes in nutritional status; i.e., check weights and lab values; assess nutritional adequacy of patient’s intake of food. Recommends supplements and/or tube feedings; monitors tube feedings for tolerance and assists physician in determining increases in rate and strength as appropriate.
- Conducts follow-up with patients between clinic visits in the form of phone calls, emails, and home visits. Meets with caretakers of the patient including parents, extended family, and daycare/school providers to ensure understanding of the diet plan. Maintains contact with other therapists working with the family. Assists with referrals to outpatient OT or SLP for feeding therapy as needed. Assesses feeding environment, including equipment and dynamic with caretakers.
Maintain dialogue with Social Worker if resources or other assistance is needed. - Provides in-service education in nutrition to hospital personnel (i.e. dietary personnel, nurse, medical students and residents); compiles and develops educational materials for use in individual and group classes.
- Attends Grand Rounds and Pediatric conferences; attends and participates in professional meeting to share information when appropriate.
- Acts as preceptor in the education/training of students ADA AP-4 (Approved Professional Practice Program) and from local universities and hospital; supervises the student’s practical experience.
- Performs all functions of an Assistant Dietitian. Utilizes hospital’s Core Values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the division’s hospital mission. Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
- Adheres to all of BMC’s RESPECT Behavioral Standards
Performs related duties as needed.
