General statement of duties and responsibilities:
Under general supervision, performs operational support, maintenance, monitoring, installation, and troubleshooting of Boston Public Schools' network infrastructure and communications systems. Assists in maintaining the district's wired and wireless network environment, telecommunications systems, and network-connected infrastructure to ensure reliable connectivity and service availability across schools and district facilities.
The Network Operations Technician serves as an entry-level network infrastructure professional responsible for supporting the operation of district network systems while developing technical expertise in networking,telecommunications, and infrastructure operations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists in the installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network infrastructure equipment, including switches, wireless access points, routers, and related devices.
- Monitors network performance and assists with identifying and resolving connectivity issues affecting schools and district facilities.
- Supports deployment, replacement, and maintenance of network equipment and communications infrastructure.
- Assists with telecommunications systems, voice services, and related communications technologies.
- Performs basic network diagnostics and troubleshooting activities and escalates complex issues as appropriate.
- Assists with network inventory management, equipment tracking, and documentation activities.
- Supports district technology projects involving network infrastructure and communications systems.
- Maintains documentation related to network equipment, configurations, and operational procedures.
- Works collaboratively with Network Administrators, field technicians, and service delivery teams to support district operations.
- Participates in planned maintenance activities, infrastructure upgrades, and technology deployments.
- Performs related duties of a similar nature, as requested by the supervisor, which are commensurate with the position.
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of two years of experience supporting technology systems, infrastructure, networking, or telecommunications
- Basic understanding of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, wireless networking, switching, and routing
- Ability to troubleshoot technical problems and follow technical procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical staff
- Valid Massachusetts driver's license
- Ability to lift and transport network and technology equipment
- City of Boston residency required
Preferred:
- Experience supporting enterprise network environments
- Familiarity with Cisco, Meraki, or equivalent networking technologies
- Experience with telecommunications or communications systems
- Network+ or similar networking certification
Experience in K–12 or public sector environments
