Job Profile Summary
This role focuses on evaluating, developing, recommending, implementing, and carrying out policies and procedures related to the delivery of high-quality patient care. In addition, it includes language services duty such as listening to, understanding, translating, and providing support for individuals with physical or mental impairments in language, including speech therapy or foreign language interpretation. The role may direct the work of lower‑level professionals or manage processes and programs, overseeing design, implementation, and delivery of policies and practices using specialized knowledge typically acquired through advanced education and experience.
The position works independently with general supervision, addresses difficult but not complex problems, and may influence others through explanation of facts, policies, and practices.
Under general supervision, this position provides accurate interpretation for patients and families with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). The interpreter translates spoken language and culture between English and the target language to ensure accurate cross‑language communication in a medical environment. Tasks may also include translating written documents, acting as a culture broker, and collaborating with department and other services to maintain a system of quality health care throughout designated areas according to departmental policies and hospital objectives.
Job DescriptionMinimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Medical interpreter certification from an accredited college or university
- One (1) year of relevant interpreting experience
- Bilingual
Preferred Qualifications:
- National certification for medical interpreters
- Three (3) years of relevant experience
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken language from English into the target language and vice versa for patients, physicians, and staff.
- Combine linguistic and cultural interpretation skills.
- Participate in family meetings with social workers to assist in completing forms, obtaining financial aid, transferring patients, and more.
- Contact non‑English speaking patients to obtain consent signatures, notify of appointments, and explain procedures, diagnosis, and medical history.
- May accompany non‑English speaking patients to operating rooms or other departments when presence is needed and participate in patient/client care conferences.
- Translate correspondence, brochures, documents, and special diagnostic procedures from English into the target language.
- May be required to take on‑call requests for emergencies at night and on weekends.
- Maintain collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues to contribute to working group goals and foster a positive work environment.
- Adhere to applicable policies and procedures related to patient/client care and personnel qualifications.
- Report to the CEO or Chief Compliance Officer when corporate compliance concerns arise.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and agency policies.
- Practice confidentiality principles per agency and federal HIPAA/HITECH guidelines.
- Participate in all mandatory in‑services.
- Prolonged standing, walking, or extensive activity.
- Regularly lift or move 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds.
- Frequently reach, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb stairs.
- Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, sick patients, bodily substances, noise, and possible radiation or other hazards.
- Regular exposure to blood borne diseases and other transmissible infections.
- Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances.
- Vision requirements: adequate close, distance, and focus adjustment abilities.
- Noise level usually moderate.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in both languages.
- Ability to provide effective and clear interpretation and communication.
- Advanced knowledge of interpreting techniques, medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, and treatments in both English and the target language.
