Assistant Attorney General | Civil Rights Division / Police Accountability Unit

This position is located in the Civil Rights Division’s Police Accountability Unit (PAU), which protects the civil rights of people who interact with local police departments and other law enforcement agencies.
Primary Duties- Screen and develop new legal matters.
- Conduct comprehensive investigations involving interviews, data analysis, and expert testimony.
- Draft written recommendations and legal analyses.
- Litigate cases in state and federal court related to PAU’s enforcement authority, including negotiating, monitoring, and enforcing settlement agreements.
- Collaborate with other state agencies, such as the Police Officer Standards & Training Commission (POST) and the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS).
- Provide technical assistance, legal guidance, and training on civil rights compliance for law‑enforcement agencies.
- Develop legislative and policy initiatives.
- Review and draft amicus briefs.
- Engage community stakeholders through speaking engagements and community meetings on policing practices and criminal‑justice reform.
Position Type: Full‑time, exempt. The office uses a hybrid model that includes remote workdays for most positions. Employees are expected to report to one of the designated Boston, New Bedford, Springfield, or Worcester office locations on in‑office days.
Salary: $87,500 to $130,595, commensurate with JD year and experience.

Qualifications- At least 3 years of full‑time legal experience, preferably in complex civil litigation and/or criminal‑justice experience, such as litigation or advocacy involving law‑enforcement practices or experience as a prosecutor or criminal‑defense attorney.
- Experience working directly with or on behalf of members of the public, especially historically marginalized communities.
- Demonstrated commitment to ensuring trust and confidence of communities in law‑enforcement agencies and to holding officers accountable for misconduct.
- Outstanding research, writing, and advocacy skills.
- Ability to work effectively and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds, including other attorneys and staff.
- Capacity to work independently and as part of a team.
- Fluency in a second language – especially Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese), Vietnamese, or Haitian Creole – is an asset.
- Demonstrated connection to the people and communities served by the Office and a commitment to fostering a respectful, diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
