Overview
Harvard University Job opportunity within the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The Office of Development and Alumni Relations (ODAR) seeks to support the School's mission by securing financial resources and loyalty from alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations to educate new generations of global health leaders and generate impactful ideas.
Job SummaryThe Managing Director, Development (MDD) is a full-time exempt position responsible for the leadership and management of ODAR’s fundraising team (5-6 staff) including principal gifts ($5M+), major gifts ($250K+), corporate and foundation relations, and coordination on gift planning with the University Development Office (UDO). The MDD collaborates with schools and university offices (e.g., Office of Communications, ORSD, OFS, AA&D, Harvard Schools, UDO) to support fundraising priorities and strategic initiatives.
The MDD works with the Vice Dean and School leadership to shape fundraising goals and develops high-level strategies to achieve annual and multi-year fundraising objectives for Harvard Chan School. The MDD also helps shape team culture, policies, and services, coordinating with the University Development Office and other partners. The incumbent leads a unified fundraising team focused on gift planning, major and principal gifts, corporate partnerships and foundations relations, and staff development to reach stretch goals.
The incumbent will ensure staff receive training and professional opportunities to maintain a best-in-class fundraising operation. The role requires scheduling flexibility and the ability to travel up to 10 percent, including nights and weekends. Applicants must submit a cover letter. Job-Specific Responsibilities- Build, motivate, mentor, and manage direct reports to achieve goals in support of Harvard Chan School’s fundraising priorities. Establish clear expectations, provide frequent feedback and evaluations, and develop and lead strategies for professional development.
- Develop and adhere to a collective development operating plan to achieve strategic cultivation and solicitation of prospects; collaborate to create a multi-year plan aligned with School fundraising priorities.
- Provide regular updates on progress to the Vice Dean, OSLT, and key stakeholders.
- Carry a small portfolio of key prospects and act as back-up for select prospects held by the Dean and Vice Dean.
- Work with team members to grow the prospect base and ensure productivity in identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and closing gifts.
- Strategically partner with the Vice Dean, OSLT and School colleagues to develop a strong case of support; develop communications, events, stewardship, and proposals.
- Prioritize transparent and lasting relationships across the Harvard Chan community through collaboration with faculty and colleagues across offices (e.g., Office of Communications, ORSD, OFS).
- Lead the development, execution, and evaluation of annual and multi-year fundraising plans aligning with priorities.
- Advance a development culture that uses systems and tools for moves management, including the Advance database and reporting tools; collaborate to define and prioritize systems and infrastructure.

This position requires scheduling flexibility. Travel expectations are up to 10 percent, including night and weekend obligations.

Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required
- 10+ years of experience in fundraising and fundraising management; 7+ years of supervisory experience required
- Leadership and supervisory experience required
