Overview
My client in the law firm space is looking for a Accounting Manager/Controller to lead their function. This role would report into the Boston office on a hybrid basis, 4x a week.
Reporting to senior leadership, this role would oversee all aspects of full accounting operations including month & year-end including monthly/annual reporting, partnership distributions, payroll, 401K/pension, and high-level project budgeting.
ControllerThe Accounting Manager/Controller works under the direct supervision of the Executive Director to assist in the management of the financial operations of the firm.
Accounting Related- Produce recurring financial reporting packages, including monthly and annual statements covering revenue generation, billable time, and cash activity.
- Calculate and process partnership distributions on a monthly basis.
- Administer full-cycle payroll, including time-off accrual tracking and balance maintenance.
- Manage retirement plan contributions and coordinate 401(k) funding transmissions.
- Oversee trust account activity (IOLTA), ensuring compliance and accurate recordkeeping.
- Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations, validating transactions and supporting documentation.
- Facilitate vendor onboarding, including completion of required registration and compliance documentation.
- Coordinate new hire setup across payroll, health insurance, and benefits platforms.
- Handle accounts payable and receivable functions, including invoicing, payment posting, collections, and annual 1099 reporting.
- Monitor business and professional license requirements, ensuring timely renewals.
- Track and report on budgets associated with firm initiatives and projects.
- Partner with the firm’s CPA to support year-end close and tax preparation activities.
- Prepare and submit annual insurance applications and renewal documentation.
- Contribute to the development and submission of client proposals.
- Provide additional operational and financial support as directed by firm leadership.
Skills and Abilities
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline required; advanced degree highly desirable.
- 5–7+ years of applicable professional experience, ideally within a professional services environment, with the ability to apply judgment across diverse situations.
- Strong organizational capabilities with exceptional attention to accuracy and detail.
- Clear and polished communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Professional presence with strong relationship-building and client service orientation.
- Comfortable handling shifting priorities and time-sensitive matters with composure.
- Solid foundation in accounting principles and financial practices.
