Position Summary

The Case Management Nurse Director evaluates and ensures that hospital resources are used appropriately and effectively. The Director oversees the collection, analysis, and reporting of financial and quality data related to utilization management, quality improvement, and performance improvement. The Director is accountable for achieving established performance targets through actively engaging multiple disciplines and professional staff. The Director must appropriately manage people, relationships, and processes to achieve maximized results.

The Director ensures that the department achieves its goals and objectives by engaging internal and external stakeholders in care management processes at Boston Medical Center. The Director promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, fosters teamwork, and champions service excellence.

Essential Responsibilities/Duties
  • Direct, coordinate, supervise, and provide clinical care to patients in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Develop and sustain a practice environment that supports evidence‑based clinical practice through planning and implementing programs that contribute to positive patient outcomes.
  • Promote integration of evidence‑based research into practice at the unit level.
  • Ensure appropriate care delivery model considering skill mix necessary to provide quality care and fluctuations in unit activity and acuity levels.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional team to develop, revise, and update clinical priorities and care‑management plans.
  • Set priorities for efficient patient‑care management that reflects cost‑effective use of time, human resources, supplies, and equipment.
  • Maintain knowledge of regulatory and accreditation standards and ensure compliance.
  • Implement the hospital’s Quality and Safety Plan through timely and accurate review of RL incident reports, follow‑up investigations, and corrective actions.
  • Utilize expert communication strategies to facilitate productive relationships within the organization and influence employee behavior.
  • Interview, hire, train, supervise, evaluate performance, and implement corrective actions for clinical staff.
  • Support affirmative‑action and equal‑opportunity policies, including diversity, equity, and inclusion activities.
  • Work with Human Resources/Labor Management to implement labor contracts and personnel policies.
  • Initiate appropriate management interventions including coaching, counseling, and progressive discipline.
  • Investigate employee incidents involving clinical practice issues and impose disciplinary action as needed.
  • Use staff engagement survey data to develop action plans and improve outcomes.
  • Encourage and reward staff performance, recommend promotions or incentives, and evaluate probationary employees.
  • Promote interprofessional communication and collaboration to enhance patient safety and teamwork.
  • Facilitate leadership through vision, strategic planning, cascading departmental goals, and fostering a shared‑governance culture.
  • Encourage participation in professional organizations and professional development activities.
  • Provide mentorship for staff professional development and continuing education.
  • Identify opportunities for quality improvement and implement strategies to improve systems and monitor outcomes.
  • Maintain credential status and completion of annual mandatory educational requirements.
Job Requirements
  • Education:

    Registered Nurse with a master’s degree (or will receive one within six months of hire). Master’s or baccalaureate degree must be in nursing.
  • Certificates and Licenses: CCM, ACM or related certification preferred; licensed to practice nursing in Massachusetts in good standing. Additional professional certification required within two years of hire.
  • Experience:

    Minimum of five years clinical experience; previous management experience within a utilization or case‑management department, or other cost/quality program.
  • Knowledge and

    Skills:

    Knowledge of the healthcare environment, evidence‑based practice, regulatory compliance, patient safety, and quality improvement. Ability to manage people, relationships, and processes to achieve results.
