What We're Looking For

Join HNTB as Traffic Department Manager in our Massachusetts office. You will lead a growing team of traffic engineers, overseeing the design, development and delivery of transportation and traffic engineering projects. The role includes managing scope, budget, and quality control while coordinating project priorities, staffing schedules and staff assignments to ensure clients receive the proper resources at the right time.

What You'll Do
  • Develop, monitor and manage the department’s operating budget in support of the group and office budgets.
  • Manage, grow and develop the discipline‐specific engineering department.
  • Coordinate department activities, establish priorities and assign staff to projects.
  • Ensure staff development, mentoring and training needs are met.
  • Collaborate with other departments or groups on work‑sharing needs and opportunities.
  • Support the implementation of the firm’s strategic plan and the Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) process on project pursuits.
  • Support contracting (SCA) processes through project delivery and contracting activities, including scope, work plans and fee reviews.
  • Support project delivery (SDA) processes, including work planning, monthly project reviews and other performance methods to ensure quality, on‑time delivery.
  • Assist in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews and win‑to‑work activities.
  • Maintain client contacts to ensure client satisfaction.
  • Lead and assist in sales and marketing efforts for department growth.
  • Recruit, hire, develop and retain department staff, including performance and compensation reviews and succession planning.
  • Manage assigned project management activities (scope, schedule, budget and quality), and perform technical discipline tasks such as research, reports, design, specifications and plans.
  • Lead multiple teams, directly and indirectly supervising 15–20 or more employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Need

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 10 years of practical experience, including 2 years of supervisory experience.

What We Prefer
  • 12 years practical experience
  • 4 years supervisory experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification in MA or RI (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
  • Experience with Synchro, Sidra, HCS, VISSIM
What You’ll Bring
  • Ability to provide technical advice, mentoring and support for HNTB management and staff.
  • Experience managing the overall operations of a department, including workload and utilization of staff.
  • Comfort interacting with clients regarding projects, technical matters and industry trends.
  • Problem‑solving on complex transportation and traffic assignments.
  • Experience providing quality control, completeness and accuracy of engineering reviews for deliverables.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with leadership on the vision and strategy for the department to identify new work, provide enhanced services and continue growth.
The Right Candidate
  • Has significant breadth and depth of technical experience in traffic analysis and transportation engineering.
  • Develops concept‑level design solutions for corridors, intersections and interchanges.
  • Has experience coordinating with other disciplines such as Highway, Environmental and Structural.
  • Possesses proficiency in delivering projects for MassDOT (additional experience with RIDOT is a plus).
  • Provides technical guidance on complex or unusual engineering projects.
  • Evaluates designs and analyses for completeness and fit.
  • Enjoys advising and guiding staff throughout design stages and mentoring less experienced staff.
  • Is collaborative and works with leadership to create a vision for the department.

Salary Range

Massachusetts: $ – $ (approximate range). The pay range is a good faith estimate and actual compensation will depend on qualifications, experience, skills and work location.
