Position Summary

Using a data‑driven approach and robust science of improvement methodology, the Director of Quality and Patient Safety – QPS/Medicine leads efforts to achieve outcomes defined by Medicine and BMC quality/safety goals. The Director provides comprehensive direction, oversight, and leadership to improve outcomes, reduce costs, and deliver value through standardization of best practices in patient‑centered care across service lines based on BMC strategic plans.

A primary role is reviewing and mitigating reported safety events for Medicine.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES
  • Develop Quality and Patient Safety capability in the Department of Medicine (DoM) and across BMC.
  • Collaborate in creating, developing, and implementing quality improvement initiatives that support Hospital and DoM strategic quality goals.
  • Build collaborative multidisciplinary relationships at all levels of the organization to achieve BMC Health System mission and quality performance.
  • Participate in DoM and QPS Department meetings, including Inpatient Directors meeting, Ambulatory GIM meeting, QPS Medical Chiefs meeting, M&Ms, DOM Grand Rounds, QPC and Patient Safety Steering Committee, and other requested meetings.
  • Analyze current performance against internal data, Vizient and/or national benchmarks; identify improvement opportunities.
  • Use safety event reporting database to identify system opportunities for preventing harm and provide feedback on actions taken.
  • Drive meaningful and sustainable change on prioritized initiatives.
  • Facilitate collaborative case reviews using an established high‑reliability framework and ensure completion of improvement interventions within defined timelines.
  • Support service lines and sections within DoM in identifying quality goals and applying quality improvement methodologies to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ensure accuracy of data collection and timely reporting for all projects.
  • Create presentations related to data interpretation, analysis, project design, program development, and evaluation.
  • Monitor emerging quality measures from regulatory agencies that may impact DoM; develop strategies to measure and meet such measures.
  • Mentor faculty and residents in integrating quality improvement work into their practice, collaborating with QI Hub and leadership improvement initiatives.
  • Provide leadership oversight and mentoring for DoM Quality Improvement Curriculum for PGY2 residents.
  • Promote a culture of safety and patient‑centered care throughout BMC and DoM.
  • Facilitate enhancements to the electronic health record to promote patient safety and optimize quality.
  • Support and encourage health services research on strategically important issues to BMC and DoM; disseminate results in local, regional, and national forums.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Education: Baccalaureate in Nursing;
    Master’s degree in a health‑related field required.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Registered Nurse licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts;
    Advanced Practice Professional preferred.
  • Experience: At least 8 years of active clinical practice; at least 5 years of escalating leadership experience; project management and program development experience essential; at least 2 years of clinical quality improvement experience; formal quality improvement training or certification preferred.

    Skills:

    Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office: Word, Access, PowerPoint, Excel); management and leadership skills; exceptional organization and communication skills; excellent presentation and writing skills; ability to collaborate with internal and external staff; proficiency with EMR, Visio, and data entry tools; demonstrated skill in clinical quality improvement; strong interpersonal skills; excellent English communication (oral and written).

Base salary range: $ – $.
