Monitoring & Maintenance Technician - Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
Overview
The Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Monitoring & Maintenance Technician is responsible for inventorying, onboarding/offboarding, monitoring, and supporting small rack-mount Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems located in EGI’s customer sites, including Intermediate Distribution Systems (IDFs) and Main Distribution Frames (MDFs). The role works closely with EGI’s customer stakeholders and data center operations to ensure in-scope UPS systems are properly configured, monitored, and maintained.
The UPS Monitoring & Maintenance Technician is a self-motivated, punctual, and reliable professional in a hands-on role supporting critical facility operations, including light maintenance and environmental services. This role requires a strong understanding of electrical systems, data cabling, and handheld power tools, along with attention to detail, the ability to work independently, and effective communication skills.
Responsibilities
- UPS Inventory & Onboarding Identify and inventory in-scope UPS systems in customer IDFs in coordination with the customer.
- Collect and document make, model, and IP address information for each system.
- Enter and maintain UPS system records in the MGB Data Center Automation System.
- Monitoring Configuration & Maintenance Apply customer-provided standard configurations to ensure proper alarm reporting.
- Verify alarm connectivity and data flow to the data center automation platform.
- Identify systems overdue for preventative maintenance or battery replacement.
- Support proactive maintenance for monitored systems and reactive service for non-monitored systems.
- Alarm Response & Troubleshooting Monitor and respond to alarms generated by in-scope UPS systems.
- Analyze alarm data to determine severity and required action.
- Coordinate with the data center team to initiate service visits or system replacement as needed.
- Document actions taken and outcomes per operational procedure.
- Spare Parts Coordination Coordinate with the customer to gather customer-owned spare parts (e.g., batteries, network management cards).
- Centralize spare parts in a designated storage location.
- Maintain an inventory of spare equipment.
- Coordinate parts usage with the customer; procurement remains the customer’s responsibility.
- Operations, Maintenance & Technical Support Monitor and perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on critical equipment under the direction of the Facilities Manager
- Diagnose and troubleshoot UPS, power, and related infrastructure systems
- Test and verify cabling signal strength and quality
- Install, assemble, and disassemble hardware, equipment, and cabinets
- Execute maintenance programs to prevent unscheduled outages, including electrical, mechanical, and fire suppression/detection systems; provide peer training as required
- Participate in the research, recommendation, and implementation of automated early-warning monitoring systems (hardware and software)
- Support deliveries, including shipping and receiving activities
- Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly work environment, including basic housekeeping tasks in data center and office areas
- Complete required documentation, including daily shift turnover reports, daily and weekly work summaries, rounds sheets, and system updates
- Communicate work status and updates via Service Now and email systems
- Adhere to all safety procedures, regulations, and operational standards
- Operational Expectations Prioritize and execute tasks effectively in high-pressure environments
- Work within Change, Asset, and Problem Management systems
- Participate in shift and site cross-training
- Carry a customer-issued pager during assigned shifts as needed
- Work outside of normal shift hours as required
- Perform other duties and special projects assigned by the Data Center Facilities Manager
- Compliance & Safety Requirements Must adhere to all customer health, safety, and security protocols while on-site.
- Must comply with hospital and clinical environment policies, including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and masks, as applicable.
