Job Description

The School of Architecture and Design is seeking applicants for a part-time Lab Technician (up to 25 hours per week) .

The Lab Technician is responsible for ensuring the safe operation of the School of Architecture and Design’s labs by providing faculty and students with fabrication training and continued support, as well as maintaining equipment and lab spaces. The role also contributes to special projects, studio setup, and events that advance the School’s mission. The Lab Technician is part of a collaborative team of technical staff and reports directly to the Director of Labs.

Functions
  • Oversee use of the School of Architecture and Design’s labs to maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment. Provide continued support for students and faculty working on design prototyping and applied research. Intervene when unsafe practices are observed and report incidents as required.
  • Provide students, staff, and faculty with instruction on equipment and fabrication methods.
  • Maintain lab equipment, including calibration, preventative maintenance, and repairs. Ensure organization, cleanliness, and general upkeep of lab spaces.
  • Assist with School of Architecture and Design special projects, including lab development initiatives, studio setup, and preparation for events such as open houses, exhibitions, and end-of-semester reviews.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team.
    • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and collaborative learning environment.
    Technical Requirements
    • Practical experience with physical model-making and rapid prototyping using both digital and traditional fabrication tools and methods.
    • Foundational woodworking.
    • Additive manufacturing technologies (e.g. FDM, SLA, and LDM) and associated equipment operation.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • CAD/CAM workflows and CNC equipment operation.
    • Maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of CNC equipment.
    • Maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of additive manufacturing equipment.
    • Studio photography.
    • Operating and programming industrial robots.
    • XR (extended reality) technologies as they relate to design development and visualization.
    • Physical computing.
    Position Details
    • Job grade:
      Grade 4 (N).
    • Expected hourly rate: $27.18 - $32.82.
    • At this time, the university is unable to sponsor applicants for H-1B visas.
