Development Manager
Clean Water Action and Clean Water Fund Massachusetts are seeking a full-time hybrid Development Manager to build and strengthen our fundraising program that supports our statewide initiatives. This role will be instrumental in cultivating donor relationships, securing foundation support, and ensuring the financial sustainability of our programs. In Massachusetts, Clean Water's work focuses on climate justice, environmental health, and equitable access to clean energy, including protecting drinking water, reducing toxic pollution, holding corporations accountable, empowering youth leadership within the environmental justice movement, and advancing pro-environment policies and leadership at every level of government.
Responsibilities:
Fundraising & Donor Relations
• Develop and implement annual and multi-year fundraising plans with the State Director
• Manage cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of Massachusetts donors, including house parties, meetings, and communications
• Track lapsed donors and identify re-engagement opportunities to support donor retention
Grants Management
• Research, write, and submit proposals to foundations and funders
• Maintain Massachusetts grant calendar, deadlines, and reporting requirements
• Partner with the national finance team on grant allocations, reporting, and compliance
• Manage pass-through grant partnerships unique to Massachusetts
Events & Campaigns
• Plan and execute fundraising events and campaigns, including appeals, donor phone banks, and stewardship activities
• Collaborate with program staff to integrate donor recruitment into programmatic work
• Partner with communications staff to design digital fundraising campaigns and donor engagement messaging
Collaboration & Communication
• Serve as liaison with the national development team to align systems, updates, and strategies
• Use Blackbaud/Raiser's Edge and Engaging Networks for donor tracking and engagement
• Produce donor-facing materials, impact reports, and fundraising collateral with communications staff and the State Director
• Coordinate with Massachusetts program staff on fundraising tasks, including grant narratives, research, data for reports, funder engagement, and supporting donor phone banks and campaigns
Finance & Administration
• Manage the Massachusetts development budget in coordination with the State Director and finance staff
• Track campaign performance, pledges, and contributions, collaborating on strategy and adjustments
• Ensure proper coding of Massachusetts grants and donor contributions in financial systems
Strategic Planning & Leadership
• Serve as thought partner to the State Director in setting and evaluating fundraising goals, analyzing performance, and ensuring strong donor stewardship strategies
Qualifications:
• Five to seven years of fundraising and development experience, preferably in the nonprofit or environmental sector.
• Demonstrated success in foundation fundraising, individual donor cultivation, and event fundraising.
• Strong grant writing and management experience, including compliance and reporting.
• Experience managing donor portfolios, fundraising campaigns, and CRM systems (experience with Blackbaud/Raiser's Edge and Engaging Networks preferred).
• Familiarity with fundraising and compliance distinctions between 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations, with the ability to design aligned donor engagement and grant strategies.
• Commitment to racial justice, equity, and inclusion, with experience working across diverse communities.
• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Strong organizational, budgeting, and project management skills.
• Ability to craft compelling stories, persuasive messaging, and creative approaches to inspire values-aligned donors and funders.
• Skilled in project design and management, with the ability to create clear plans and execute effectively.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a dynamic team environment.
• This role follows a hybrid schedule, with in-office expectations a few times per month and in-person events a few times per quarter.
