Position Overview
Position:
Major Gift Officer (MGO) at the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). A full‑time, hybrid role based in the Massachusetts region. Responsible for developing and cultivating a portfolio of major and planned gift prospects at the $25,000 level, and securing Annual Fund contributions at the $10,000+ level through individual donor partnerships.
- Serve as an integral member of the development team.
- Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors at 5‑, 6‑, and 7‑figure levels.
- Manage a high volume of identification and qualification work from a large pool of active donors.
- Meet or exceed annual qualitative and quantitative activity and giving goals.
- Recruit and involve volunteer leaders to extend staff reach in donor cultivation and solicitation.
- Prepare written briefings for senior AMC leadership and key volunteers as needed.
- Write gift proposals and stewardship reports as needed.
- Secure planned gifts from prospects within the portfolio.
- Assist marketing and communications efforts to increase visibility, visitor numbers, and community engagement.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- At least three years’ relevant professional experience in fundraising, development, stewardship, donor relations, or sales.
- Demonstrated success in building positive, constructive relationships with a variety of people.
- Superior relationship‑management and customer‑service orientation, friendly manner, and ability with donors in person, over the phone, via email, and mail.
- Strong writing and communication skills, with proactive donor contact.
- Deep understanding of and ability to communicate AMC’s mission and programs with sincerity, persuasion, and passion.
- Commitment to the Association of Fundraising Professionals Code of Ethical Standards.
- Ability to meet or exceed annual dollar and activity goals and contribute to the team’s fundraising and activity objectives.
- Experience managing and growing donor numbers and revenue from a specific donor group or portfolio is preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; database‑proficient with ability to learn complex systems; knowledge of Salesforce is a plus.
- Passion for AMC’s mission and commitment to conservation, outdoor education, and equitable access to nature.
- Frequent travel required, often to backcountry locations; ability to ski, snowshoe, or hike up to 7 miles, carrying loads up to 20 pounds.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Discretion, confidentiality with donor information.
- Wilderness First Aid certification and valid driver’s license.
- Salary
:
Remote or other USA‑based locations: $77,214 - $104,244;
Boston‑based: $88,792 - $119,881. - Benefits
