Volunteer Coordinator
More Than Words (MTW) is a nonprofit social enterprise that empowers youth who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless, or out of school to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business. By working as a team to manage their own retail and online used book business and community space, youth develop employment skills, leadership, and self-confidence they need to successfully transition to adulthood.
The Volunteer Coordinator is a focused, passionate, and detail-oriented team member who will support the Advancement Department in managing and engaging volunteers to support our mission in many ways. The Volunteer Coordinator reports to the Associate Director of Development and communicates closely with cross-site More Than Words Operations Teams. The Volunteer Coordinator runs 1-3 group volunteer events weekly, manages a schedule of group volunteer events for future weeks, and provides administrative support for the program including managing an active volunteer email inbox.
The Coordinator will also support the Associate Director in managing and supporting individual volunteers, including supporting scheduling and outreach. This position will be based out of the Boston site, with occasional off-site events expected with advance notice and planning (transportation support possible for offsite).
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Group Volunteer Events (60%):
- Maintains a detailed and accurate calendar of group volunteer events for both MTW locations, tracking open slots, dates on hold, and confirmed.
- Personally runs Boston volunteer group events while engaging youth on the team, typically 1-2 groups weekly but occasionally as many as 3. Works with youth to set up the tasks, greet the volunteers, manage sign-in, give a tour, support the tasks, engage with volunteers, run check-out, make an ask for financial donations, and clean up the space.
- Maintains volunteer email accounts at least once per shift to provide quick and professional responses to all groups reaching out about volunteering. Responds to inquiries, offers dates, schedules events, sends reminders and information, and sends follow-up materials.
- In collaboration with the Associate Director, supports fundraising goals for More Than Words by asking volunteer groups to contribute financially in conjunction with their event, as appropriate.
- Maintains accurate records in the Salesforce database of all volunteer emails.
- Individual Volunteers (20%):
- Supports Associate Director in managing individual volunteer intake by responding to outreach and supporting volunteer overview sessions and follow-up.
- Communicates with volunteers about closures/cancellations and with staff about volunteer vacations/absences.
- Maintains accurate records in the Salesforce database of all volunteers and their attendance, and accurate files on each volunteer.
- Department Support (20%):
- Represents MTW at applicable community events and volunteer fairs, as a tool to meet and engage with community members who are potential fits for various volunteer activities.
- Supports Advancement Department with routine donation processing and donor recognition, entering donations into the Salesforce database, updating records, sending tax receipts, and writing personalized thank you cards.
- Flexibly supports department with other small projects as assigned.
Key
Qualifications:
- GED or High School Diploma
- Be consistently moving towards educational outcomes
- Have transitioned from MTW at least 2 years prior to apply
- At least 21 years of age
- Be able to follow through on commitments
- Be passionate about the MTW mission
- Have a learning mindset and want to learn a lot of new technical skills
- Love to be organized
- Enjoy communicating both by writing and speaking
- Prior experience with data-entry, office work, financial systems, or data analysis is a plus

Schedule:
Maximum of 29 hours per week;
Mondays and Thursdays are a definite; other days and times to be discussed with your supervisor. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be scheduled in advance on mutual agreement for events or presentations. This is a 6-month position, with the potential to renew after evaluating at the end of the 6-month period.
Compensation: $24.00 per hour
