PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION:
Nurses will be hired for the programs listed below.
Extended School Year (ESY) offers specialized services to students with disabilities. The decision to provide ESY is made by the IEP Team, who assesses the necessity to minimize substantial regression and reduce substantial recoupment. The IEP Team evaluates each student’s level of needs and recommends specific IEP services during ESY based on individual student requirements.
Reports To: Position reports to the Health Services, the ESY Site Coordinator, and the Director of Extended School Year and Expanded Learning in the Office of Specialized Services.
Assignment Details: When you are hired to work the Extended School Year (ESY) program, you are committing to the entire duration of the program. Your assignment may involve working at different sites as staffing needs arise. Flexibility in location is essential.
Program Schedule ESY:
- The instructional hours for students are 5 hours per day, 5 days per week, for 5 weeks from July 6 to August 7, 2026.
Services: The nurse is expected to: commit to all 25 days of the program; work a 6‑hour day, 5 days per week, for 5 weeks (including 30 minutes for student arrival and dismissal); participate in 3.5 hours of mandatory professional development prior to ESY start; set up the nurse station, evaluate student medical needs, coordinate care, attend ESY Open House; pack up the station after program;
return medication and equipment to families; communicate medication/equipment issues to the Office of Health Services.
The ESY Nurse provides skilled nursing care and management of the special needs of students as well as medication administration. Immunization surveillance and routine health screenings are conducted annually. Routine emergency care is provided for students and staff. For students with complex medical needs, the summer site nurse may act as a liaison for school, home, and outside medical facilities. The nurse promotes student wellness and maintains a healthy school environment.
- Sign in/out daily as directed by ESY Site Director and Health Services.
- Provide emergency medical care to students in all BPS summer learning programs or Extended School Year programs at assigned sites.
- Collaborate with parent(s)/guardians regarding their child’s health needs during the ESY program.
- Administer and/or supervise prescription medication.
- Provide treatments including enteral feedings, catheterizations, diabetes care, and seizure management as per provider order.
- Monitor and assess compliance with immunization standards per BPS and DPH regulations.
- Assess, support, and report all students/staff with communicable diseases per established protocols.
- Coordinate with student’s medical care teams as appropriate for any changes.
- Maintain and secure medication and equipment, returning them as required at program end.
- Communicate with students, teachers, and families regarding student medical needs.
- Share Individualized Collaborative Health Care Plans on an “as needed” basis to support patient privacy.
- Be available for health‑related concerns during arrival and dismissal of all students.
- Attend to health‑related concerns during breakfast, lunch, and other activities.
- Consult with teachers and related service providers to address students’ healthcare needs.
- Participate in all scheduled professional development.
- Engage as a partner in planning and problem‑solving.
- Perform other related duties as requested by the Site Coordinator or Summer Program Manager.
- Current Boston Public Schools Nurse.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
- Massachusetts licensure as a Registered Nurse.
