Job Profile Summary

Responsibilities include managing projects and processes, working independently with limited supervision, coaching and reviewing the work of lower level professionals, and resolving difficult and complex problems. The role focuses on providing high‑quality patient care and promoting wellness. The Physician Assistant works collaboratively with physicians and other health‑care professionals to diagnose and treat a variety of acute and chronic conditions. The role involves conducting comprehensive patient assessments, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, performing procedures, educating patients and families, and adjusting treatment plans as necessary, all under the supervision of licensed physicians.

Job Overview

This Physician Assistant – NICU position is responsible, within legal limitations, for assisting the physician staff of the Department in providing medical services to patients. The position performs complete, detailed and accurate initial evaluations, including medical histories and review of patient records to develop comprehensive medical status reports, and orders laboratory, radiological and diagnostic studies appropriate for the patient. Must coordinate treatment plans, monitor progress, and refer patients as necessary.

Provides for the implementation of Nursing Service policies and cooperates with other services to ensure quality health care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Successful completion of a Physician’s Assistant program.
  • Physician’s Assistant licensure within the first three months following acceptance of an application for medical staff membership and privilege.
  • Physician’s Assistant certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • State and federal controlled substances registration.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage a broad spectrum of patients and perform a wide range of clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures.
  • Assess patient health status by obtaining complete medical histories and performing physical examinations, laboratory and diagnostic studies.
  • Diagnose health and developmental problems and care for patients with acute and chronic diseases.
  • Assess patient/family psychosocial needs, educational needs, learning readiness, and barriers to learning during admission.
  • Record findings and recognize early stages of serious physical or emotional issues.
  • Consult with physicians regarding patient evaluation and condition.
  • Develop comprehensive, individualized plans of care using established standards of care.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, practitioners, physicians, and co‑workers.
  • Prioritize and modify patient care in response to changing situations, and triage and refer to appropriate sources when necessary.
  • Order appropriate labs and radiological testing based on assessment of needs.
  • Maintain required records, reports, and statistics; ensure accurate documentation for administrative purposes.
  • Demonstrate appropriate prescribing habits (agents, volume, and refill).
  • Encourage preventative medicine through patient education and counseling.
  • Interpret patient needs to other clinical personnel and contribute to care plans.
  • Collaborate with physicians to manage patient care cost‑effectively and utilize resources across the system.
  • Orient and train new Physician Assistants, coordinate staff schedules, assist with performance evaluations, and provide guidance on team building.
  • Participate in rounds with residents, complete daily patient management assignments, and assist with patient care and disposition, including handling medical emergencies during regular working hours on the inpatient service.
