The Nurse Midwife is a professional authorized by the Board of Registration in Nursing to practice Nurse Midwifery. Advanced education has prepared him/her to assume management responsibility of a caseload of obstetrical and gynecological patients. The Nurse Midwife provides obstetrical care to patients, which includes physical assessment, patient education, nursing care and management of problems in accordance with approved nurse midwifery guidelines.
The staff nurse midwife is responsible to the Program Director, certified Nurse Midwives and/or the Executive Director of Women’s and Newborn Health.

- Authorization to practice in the expanded role in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Registration to issue controlled substances with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
- Works in a variety of patient care environments where there may be exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials.
- Assumes management responsibility for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation for a plan of care for obstetrical and gynecological patients selected according to approved nurse midwifery guidelines.
- Collaborates with the health care team in planning and implementing patient care for obstetrical and gynecological health needs.
- Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of the principles of growth and development with newborn, adolescent and adult patient populations.
- Assist in the development, implementation and revision of nurse midwifery guidelines and standards of care.
- Evaluate individual health care status of patients, formulate a management plan and revise the plan as indicated.
- Participate in continuous case review and appropriately communicate current data regarding all patients cared for by the nurse midwifery practice.
- Issue prescriptions and medication orders in accordance with BWH nurse Midwifery practice protocols, and the rules set forth by the Board of Nursing.
- Document in a clear, complete, concise and organized manner demonstrating skill in the nursing process.
- Seek consultation according to nurse midwifery protocols from all members of the health care team involved in patient’s care and make appropriate referrals.
- Provide consultation services as required by the health care team.
- Complete history and physical examinations and laboratory tests as appropriate.
- Continue assessment and teaching throughout pregnancy as indicated by documentation.
- Manage normal labor and conduct delivery, including assessment of maternal and fetal status, identification of deviations from normal, management of third stage, management of episiotomy and peripheral repairs.
- Manage maternal postpartum course including teaching, referrals, and follow‑up.
- Provide 24‑hour on‑call coverage to a caseload of obstetrical patients, including telephone triage.
- Identify, manage and consult for obstetrical emergencies as indicated.
- Participate in ongoing review of nurse midwifery prescriptive practice.
- Participate in the Quality Management Program on a regular and continuing basis.
- Demonstrate appropriate collaborative and consultative relationships with other providers within the institution and community.
- Demonstrate awareness of community resources and assist staff, patients and families to use them effectively.
- Serve on nursing and hospital committees and assume responsibility for disseminating and communicating information to staff.
