Nurse Director, BWH Radiation Oncology

Job Summary

The Nurse Director of Radiation Oncology provides comprehensive leadership and oversight for nursing services across the Brigham and Women’s Department of Radiation Oncology, covering the Academic Medical Center (BWH Boston) and three community‑based practice locations. The role establishes strategic, clinical, and operational direction, ensuring safe, high‑quality, patient‑centered care system‑wide.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities I. Scholarship
  • Creates an environment that supports and celebrates professional growth of nursing practice.
  • Actively supports the development of new nursing knowledge.
  • Ensures use and adherence to evidence‑informed practice/standards for nursing care.
  • Supports reflective practice through narratives and meets the needs of the patient population.
  • Participates in ongoing self‑performance appraisal and seeks feedback from colleagues.
  • Maintains necessary clinical and managerial expertise through evidence‑based practice.
  • Participates in service‑ and department‑wide developmental initiatives.
  • Demonstrates commitment to lifelong learning through professional organizations.
  • Assesses staff learning needs and implements programs/projects to address them in collaboration with Professional Development Managers and the Center for Nursing Excellence.
  • Facilitates opportunities for staff to precept and teach others.
II. Authentic Leadership
  • Serves as a clinical leader/coach/mentor to staff.
  • Promotes staff participation in annual goal setting for the patient care area(s) and the Department of Nursing.
  • Acts as a leader within the nursing community following ANA Code of Ethics.
  • Ensures appropriate personnel to meet the needs of the designated patient population.
  • Designs and implements staffing patterns responsive to a dynamic care environment.
  • Interviews, hires, and oversees orientation of new employees.
  • Provides formal and informal feedback regarding performance to staff members.
  • Delegates authority or responsibility while maintaining 24/7 accountability.
  • Demonstrates consistent leadership in maintaining a fair and just culture.
  • Ensures staff participation in local decision‑making and department initiatives.
III. Meaningful Recognition
  • Provides formal and informal opportunities for staff to develop personal career goals and plans.
  • Encourages and recommends staff participation in unit‑based decision making and organizational initiatives.

  • Accounts for planning, implementing and evaluating the Department of Nursing Quality Plan, including nurse‑sensitive indicators and patient satisfaction metrics.
  • Participates in Brigham and Women’s Hospital quality improvement programs, articulating quality agenda for staff.
  • Develops local‑based quality agenda using performance‑improvement methodologies with department and hospital leaders.
  • Translates quality‑improvement findings into daily operations and strategic planning.
  • Communicates outcomes to staff and interdisciplinary colleagues, facilitating participation in quality improvement.
  • Teams on clinical matters to promote desired patient outcomes.
  • Ensures staff compliance with regulatory standards, including licensure, orientation, ongoing education and annual competencies.
