Brookside is a licensed Community Health Center of Brigham and Women’s Hospital that provides multidisciplinary, comprehensive care. Services include Adult, Family and Pediatric Primary Care, OB/GYN, Family Planning, Dental/Oral Surgery, Nutrition/WIC, Behavioral Health, and Specialty Medicine (Cardiology, Pulmonology, Nephrology). Brookside also has an onsite laboratory, financial counseling, and community resource specialists. Each year more than 11,000 patients from Jamaica Plain, Boston, and surrounding areas receive care, resulting in over 69,000 visits.
The majority of the patient population is Spanish‑speaking and socioeconomically underserved. The center is a teaching site for several medical and health professional schools.
Under the supervision of a Nurse Manager or licensed clinical leader and in collaboration with other team members, provide direct and indirect patient care in accordance with the scope of practice.
Essential Functions- Interview patients about current problems, medications, allergies, and review medical records for relevant information.
- Measure and record patients’ vital signs, such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration.
- Provide basic patient care or treatments, including dressing wounds, treating bedsores, giving enemas or douches, rubbing with alcohol, massaging, performing catheterizations, routine immunizations, nebulizer treatments, and visual acuity tests.
- Participate in patient treatment regimens, including administering medications under the supervision of a physician and registered nurse.
- Perform various office responsibilities: answer phones, take messages, and provide triage within the scope of licensed practical nursing practice accurately and promptly.
- Collect samples, such as blood, urine, or sputum, and perform routine laboratory tests on samples.
- Prepare patients for examinations, tests, or treatments and explain procedures.
- Assist patients with bathing, dressing, maintaining personal hygiene, moving in bed, standing, and walking.
- Graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing Program.
- Current LPN licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required.
- Basic Life Support preferred.
- Nursing experience preferred.
- Spanish language strongly preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of patient education: interviewing, listening skills, teaching and engagement techniques, and understanding of health‑related conditions.
- Ability to accurately perform vital signs and obtain pertinent health information.
- Ability to administer medication via injections, intravenous, and oral routes.
- Knowledge and ability to perform specific procedures and tests as appropriate to the clinical setting.
- Ability to communicate in a professional, courteous, clear and concise manner.
