RN Nurse, Surgical Assistant, Operating Room Nurse
Job Summary
Utilizing the nursing process, provide immediate and long‑term nursing care needs of patients within the standards of the department, hospital and regulatory agencies. This role supports patient care, research, teaching, and community service at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
Essential Functions- Accurately assess patients’ needs.
- Utilize multiple data sources to determine actual/potential health problems and functional status.
- Apply Recovery Oriented Framework to identify patient strengths.
- Perform point‑of‑care testing.
- Communicate findings effectively to members of the healthcare team.
- Document response to interventions and demonstrate understanding of patients’ responses to treatment interventions.
- Identify patient behaviors that contribute to crisis; use non‑verbal and verbal techniques to de‑escalate crisis situations.
- Accurately plan nursing interventions for assigned patients.
- Modify and individualize Nursing Plan of Care and protocols.
- Participate in the development of multidisciplinary treatment plans.
- Prioritize patient care needs.
- Partner with patients and families to support recovery goals.
- Provide and implement nursing care interventions.
- Establish a therapeutic alliance with assigned patients.
- Administer medication safely, accurately and timely using BMV scanning.
- Review physician orders in a timely manner.
- Promote interventions that provide the least‑restrictive alternatives and recovery‑oriented goals.
- Lead patient groups.
- Evaluate effectiveness of nursing care interventions.
- Communicate patients’ clinical status at rounds and shift reports.
- Use evidence‑based nursing knowledge to guide practice decisions.
- Provide leadership role in organizing and providing patient care.
- Direct and supervise MHSs.
- Delegate care interventions.
- Assume leadership role in medical and psychiatric emergencies.
- Promote or provide critical‑incident de‑briefing following emergency events.
- Education:
Other certificate/diploma in Nursing required;
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred. - Licensed RN, Massachusetts, in good standing.
- BLS and ACLS certification required (or obtained within 6 months of hire).
- Minimum 2 years of OR nursing experience, including scrub and circulate roles – ophthalmology experience strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of sterile technique, AORN guidelines, and surgical safety practices.
- Ability to work independently and adapt quickly in a dynamic environment.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Function as both scrub and circulating nurse for ophthalmic surgical procedures including cataract, retina, glaucoma, corneal, oculoplastic, and other microsurgical cases.
- Prepare the operating room with necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Ensure adherence to sterile technique and proper infection control protocols.
- Monitor and support patients throughout the intra‑operative phase.
- Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical techs, and fellow nurses to ensure smooth surgical workflow.
- Document all intra‑operative care and nursing interventions accurately.
- Participate in room turnover and preparation between cases.
- Adhere to all hospital policies, regulatory standards, and safety guidelines.
Skills and Abilities
Experienced and highly motivated Per Diem Operating Room RN to join our ophthalmic surgical team. Dual‑role position requires proficiency in both scrub and circulating responsibilities, supporting a high‑volume, fast‑paced ophthalmology OR with a focus on exceptional patient care and surgical outcomes.
