SummaryThe PACU (Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit) Registered Nurse provides specialized care to patients recovering from anesthesia and surgery. This role involves assessing patient recovery, implementing post‑operative care plans, administering treatments, collaborating with the surgical team, and coordinating care for discharge or transport. The PACU RN ensures patient safety and comfort during the critical recovery period, using advanced clinical skills and effective communication.
ResponsibilitiesReceive and conduct comprehensive assessments of patients transferring from the operating room and evaluate post‑anesthesia condition. Monitor and evaluate vital signs, level of consciousness, and recovery. Administer prescribed medications and treatments. Maintain awareness of comfort and safety needs. Observe, document patient conditions, treatments, and incidents. Respond promptly to emergency situations. Accurately document assessments, interventions, and recovery progress in medical records. Develop and deliver individualized patient and family education plans.
Collaborate with the surgical team and other healthcare providers. Participate in handoff communications. Operate and monitor PACU‑specific equipment. Perform additional duties as within scope.
- One year of recent experience as a PACU RN.
- Valid RN license in compliance with state regulations.
- Current BLS (AHA/ARC) certification.
- ACLS (AHA/ARC) certification.
- PALS (AHA/ARC) or ENPC certifications.
- Other certifications and licenses that may be required.
- Critical thinking, service excellence, and good interpersonal communication skills.
- Reading, writing, and communication in English.
- Follow written and verbal instructions; proficiency in PC skills.
- Physical: able to remain stationary, move about, move equipment (50–100 lbs), push, pull, and bend.
- Interpersonal: work effectively with professional and ancillary personnel, present a positive attitude and professionalism.
- Technical/Motor: grasp, fine manipulation, push/pull, and assist with procedures or equipment.
- Mental: cope with frequent contact with the public, meet deadlines under pressure, work under close or occasional supervision, handle irregular schedules, maintain concentration to detail.
- Sensory: possess visual acuity and ability to communicate effectively.
