- Conducts comprehensive pre-admission and pre-operative assessments for surgical and procedural patients, including review of medical history, medications, allergies, prior anesthesia history, functional status, comorbidities, and relevant diagnostic information.
- Identifies patients who require additional clinical optimization, specialty input, testing, medication planning or anesthesia review prior to surgery or procedures.
- Orders, reviews, interprets, and follows up on appropriate pre-operative testing within scope of practice, institutional policy, and established peri-operative protocols.
- Assesses and manages common peri-operative risk factors, including cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, renal, anticoagulation, medication, frailty, and social or access-related considerations that may affect procedural readiness.
- Collaborates with anesthesiologists, surgeons, proceduralists, registered nurses, residents, primary-care providers, specialty consultants, and administrative staff to resolve clinical and operational issues before the day of surgery.
- Provides clear patient and family education regarding pre-operative instructions, medication management, testing needs, follow-up requirements, and peri-operative expectations.
- Completes accurate, timely, and thorough documentation in the electronic medical record and ensures pre-operative assessments meet hospital, departmental, regulatory, and clinical standards.
- Escalates complex, high-risk, incomplete, or time-sensitive cases to anesthesia, surgical, nursing, APP, or operational leadership as appropriate to support safe patient care and reliable OR/procedural throughput.
- Contributes to performance-improvement efforts related to patient readiness, PAT throughput, cancellation reduction, documentation quality, patient safety, resident education, and standard work development.
- Master's degree or higher from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- Clinical experience sufficient to independently perform pre-operative assessment, patient education, care coordination, and documentation within the nurse practitioner scope of practice.
- Experience evaluating adult patients with common acute and chronic medical conditions in a hospital, ambulatory, surgical, peri-operative, internal medicine, emergency medicine, critical care, cardiology, or procedural setting.
- Current or eligible Massachusetts Nurse Practitioner license.
- Current national board certification as a Nurse Practitioner in an appropriate population focus (Adult-Gerontology, Family, Acute Care, or other area acceptable to the department).
- Current BLS certification.
- Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA registration, as applicable to clinical practice and institutional requirements.
- Eligibility for appointment, credentialing, and privileging as an Advanced Practice Provider at Boston Medical Center.
- Current ACLS certification or ability to obtain within a timeframe determined by the department.
- Additional certification or training relevant to peri-operative medicine, internal medicine, critical care, cardiology, anesthesia, or surgical patient optimization.
- Minimum of 1-2 years clinical nursing experience, ideally in a critical care or acute care setting.
- Strong clinical judgment and decision-making ability.
- Team-oriented with a focus on collaboration in high-acuity environments.
- Commitment to patient safety, quality care, and professional development.
- Exceptional critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities, particularly in high-pressure situations.
- In-depth knowledge of anesthesia principles, techniques, medications, and equipment.
- Proficiency in utilizing anesthesia technology, monitoring devices, and electronic medical record systems.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with diverse healthcare professionals and interact with patients and their families.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of current anesthesia practices, research, and advancements.
Compensation Range: $290,000 - $290,000. This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications.
