DESCRIPTION:
Nurses will be hired for the programs listed below.
Extended School Year (ESY) offers specialized services to students with disabilities. The decision to provide ESY is made by the IEP Team, who assesses the necessity to minimize substantial regression and reduce substantial recoupment. The IEP Team evaluates each student’s level of needs and recommends specific IEP services during ESY based on individual student requirements.
REPORTS TO: Position reports to the Health Services, the ESY Site Coordinator, and the Director of Extended School Year and Expanded Learning in the Office of Specialized Services.
When you are hired to work the Extended School Year (ESY) program, you are committing to the entire duration of the program. This means that your assignment may involve working at different sites, as staffing needs arise. Flexibility in location is an essential requirement of the position, and by accepting this job offer, you agree to be available for reassignment to various sites as needed throughout the program.

- The instructional hours for students are 5 hours per day, 5 days per week, for 5 weeks from July 6 to August 7, 2026.
- At sites that host both ESY and Summer Learning Academies, students will be in the building from July 6 – August 7, 2026.
- Commit to working all 25 days of the program.
- Work a 6‑hour day, 5 days per week, for 5 weeks (this includes 30 minutes for student arrival and 30 minutes for student dismissal).
- Participate in 3.5 hours of mandatory professional development provided by Health Services prior to the start of ESY.
- Set up the nurse station/office, evaluate student medical needs, coordinate care with families in preparation for the program and attend ESY Open House on (Date TBD).
- Pack up the nurse's station and materials, notify Health Services of any missing or broken equipment.
- Return medication and equipment to families and communicate issues related to student medication/equipment to the Office of Health Services.
The ESY Nurse provides skilled nursing care and management of the special needs of students as well as medication administration. Immunization surveillance and routine health screenings are conducted annually. Routine emergency care is provided for students and staff. If necessary, students are referred to their primary healthcare provider for an evaluation. For students with complex medical needs, the summer site nurse may act as a liaison for the school, home, and outside medical facilities.
The summer site nurse promotes student wellness and assists in maintaining a healthy school environment.
Responsibilities include :
- Sign in/out daily as directed by ESY Site Director and per Health Services instruction.
- Provide emergency medical care to students in all BPS summer learning programs or Extended School Year programs at assigned sites.
- Collaborate and communicate with parent(s)/guardians regarding their child’s health needs while participating in the ESY program.
- Administer and/or supervise the administration of prescription medication to students.
- Provide treatments, including enteral (g/j tube) feedings, catheterizations, diabetes care, and seizure management among other student's health care needs per provider order.
- Monitor and assess compliance with immunization standards as per BPS and DPH regulations.
- Assess, support, and report all students/staff (emergency assessment only) with all communicable diseases, following established protocols.
- Coordinate with student’s medical care teams as appropriate for any changes.
