Job Summary

Staff Nurse responsible for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care for a complex patient population, including infusion, education, psychosocial support, and collaborative multidisciplinary care. Requires clinical expertise, critical thinking, and knowledge of clinical research principles.

Location & Schedule

On site, flex between DFCI Boston and Chestnut Hill expansion sites. 10‑hour weekday shifts (6:30 am – 6:30 pm), no weekends, evenings or holidays.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • A. Deliver expert, evidence‑based nursing care
    • Implement nursing process: assess patient/family needs, develop diagnoses, plan care, implement the plan, evaluate response.
    • Document care per Institute and regulatory requirements.
    • Administer medications, including chemotherapy, safely and efficiently; may administer blood transfusions.
    • Evaluate educational and psychological needs; incorporate into care plan.
    • Educate patient and family on disease and treatment modalities, including chemotherapy and radiation.
    • Recognize and respond to emergencies; maintain BLS certification.
    • Identify community resources and refer appropriately.
    • Comply with nursing practice standards and licensure requirements.
  • B. Establish rapport with patients and families from diverse backgrounds
    • Interact with patients/families with a caring, compassionate, privacy‑respecting approach.
    • Develop problem‑solving strategies to meet individual needs.
    • Demonstrate age‑specific care skills.
    • Foster sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, gender, and age diversity.
  • C. Manage the environment of patient care
    • Monitor patient safety and regulatory compliance.
    • Follow Institute, Nursing, and Patient Care Services policies, procedures, and standards.
    • Adhere to ANA Code of Ethics in all practice.
  • D. Contribute to unit, division, and Institute goals
    • Assist in defining goals and developing systems for unit and division.
    • Participate in committees, councils, and initiatives.
    • Show flexibility and accept additional responsibilities.
    • Participate in QA/QI projects.
    • Support research activities.
  • E. Work collaboratively within the health‑care team
    • Collaborate with peers and coworkers; address conflicts.
    • Act as a contributing member of a multidisciplinary team.
    • Delegate and supervise assistive personnel.
    • Serve as charge nurse when necessary.
  • F. Seek professional growth opportunities
    • Identify growth areas, set goals and methods.
    • Attend in‑services, workshops, seminars; share knowledge.
    • Act as preceptor/mentor.
    • Collaborate on professional reports, articles, presentations.
    • Meet annual evaluation and competency requirements.
    • Maintain active membership in professional organizations.
  • G. Procedural Nurse Responsibilities
    • Deliver evidence‑based care and perform pre‑procedural assessments.
    • Obtain patient history, medication reconciliation, review sedation history.
    • Prepare premedication regimen with procedure APP.
    • Obtain IV access and lab work.
    • Administer pre‑procedural medications; titrate as needed; administer chemotherapy and perform procedures per Institute policy; may transfuse blood.
    • Co‑sign Intrathecal Chemotherapy administered by APP.
    • Assist in emergency procedures to control patient condition changes.
    • Maintain awareness of suite activities; collaborate with Procedure Suite team.
    • Stay current with procedural nursing techniques.
    • Monitor intraprocedural patient for airway, circulation, respiration.
    • Recover patients post‑sedation; provide discharge teaching; assess safety.
    • Coordinate research specimen collection with coordinators.
    • Maintain Joint Commission readiness.
    • Provide support for biopsy specimen collection when not in sedation role.

    • Ability to work in busy setting with complex‑needs patients.
    Minimum Job Qualifications
    • Associate degree in Nursing. Baccalaureate degree preferred. If Associate, must complete BSN within 4 years.
    • 1 year recent experience as a Registered Nurse; ambulatory or oncology preferred.
    License/Certification/Registration Required
    • Registered Nurse license in Massachusetts or New Hampshire.
    • AHA BLS required; ACLS accepted.
    • Professional nursing certification preferred (OCN, BMTCN, CPHON, AOCNP, CRNI, RN‑BC).
    Other Information

    Salary range: $42.65 – $105.81 per hour. Pay determined by market and experience. Union positions subject to Collective Bargaining Agreement.
