Job Description

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the Pain Free Service will be an integral member of a new multidisciplinary program at Boston Children’s Hospital designed to provide safe, efficient, patient and family-centered care for children and young adults undergoing non-operative procedures and diagnostic testing. Located in the brand-new procedure rooms, the Pain Free Service will provide a dedicated procedural environment separate from the operating rooms, with a particular focus on minimizing pain, anxiety, and distress.

The program will integrate nursing, APRNs, Anesthesiologists, Child Life, and administrative expertise with innovative approaches to distraction, anxiolysis, sedation, and procedural support. As a member of the program’s founding clinical team, the NP will participate in both direct patient care and the development of clinical workflows, patient selection criteria, protocols, and systems necessary to establish and grow the Pain Free Service.
The ideal candidate is an experienced NP who enjoys both clinical practice and program development. This individual will be comfortable working in a new and evolving environment, identifying opportunities to improve workflows, and collaborating across disciplines to create a procedural experience that is safe, efficient, and responsive to the individual needs of children and families.
Key Responsibilities

  • Perform pre-procedure assessments to determine patient readiness, individualized care needs, and the appropriate level and location of procedural support.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nursing, Child Life, procedural teams, and families to develop care plans that minimize pain, anxiety, and distress, particularly for patients with developmental, behavioral, or complex healthcare needs.
  • Provide direct NP care before, during, and after procedures, including IV placement, ordering and administration of premedication, anesthesia consent, and intraprocedural assistance.
  • Coordinate care and communication among referring services, anesthesia providers, procedural teams, nursing, Child Life, patients, and families.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding procedural preparation, expectations, and recovery.
  • Develop and refine clinical pathways, patient selection criteria, workflows, and safety and escalation protocols for scheduled and add-on procedures.
  • Participate in staff education, quality improvement, and evaluation of program outcomes, including safety, efficiency, patient experience, and procedural success.
  • Support the continued development and expansion of the Pain Free Service to improve access to procedures that can safely be performed outside of the operating room.
  • Working 30 or 40 hours per week, 10-hour shifts 6:30am-5pm, M-F. No nights, weekends or holidays.
