Bridge Inspector

Hybrid | Watertown, MA or Boston, MA

Overview

In this position, you will play an important role in the planning and execution of structural inspections and the development of bridge load ratings. The work involves a mix of office and field tasks. You should have a can‑do attitude, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment.

Responsibilities
  • Support the inspection team’s quality, procedures, workload, and training.
  • Prepare proposals for new inspection contracts.
  • Plan and perform structural inspections of highway and railroad bridges, culverts, ancillary structures, and buildings following NHI and AREMA standards.
  • Conduct quality reviews of bridge inspection report narratives, sketches, photos, and basic repair and rehabilitation cost estimates.
  • Manage inspection equipment and budget to outfit teams with the latest gear.
  • Participate in the growth of the inspection practice across the VHB footprint.
Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and adjacent to live highway and railroad traffic.
  • Familiarity with MBTA, MassDOT, AASHTO, and AREMA inspection requirements.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proactive, self‑motivated, with excellent attention to detail and quality.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Enthusiastic to learn, seek opportunities, and take responsibility.
  • Availability to work overnight when needed on roadways and ROW tracks.
  • Experience with vertical lift equipment, under‑bridge inspection trucks, and rope access credentials is a plus.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 3–5 years of bridge inspection experience.
  • EIT license.
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (structural emphasis preferred).
  • Completion of NHI/FHWA Safety Inspection of In‑Service Bridges course preferred.
  • Completion of NHI/FHWA Fracture Critical (NSTM) course preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Salary range for this position in Boston/Watertown, MA is $92,000 – $112,000. Final compensation will be based on qualifications, education, and experience.
