A Postdoctoral Scholar supervised by Prof. Arthur Shih in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Boston University aims to study and understand the electrochemical refinement of iron. Besides the central work to be carried out in mechanical engineering at Boston University, collaborations with other research groups and user facilities are anticipated in this position. Other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • 20% – Propose research questions, hypotheses, and work plans in a rigorous and organized manner independently. Communicate the above information timely and effectively with PIs, collaborators, and other lab members, and be receptive to colleagues’ feedback and embrace the suggestions agreed on by the team.
  • 30% – Execute confirmed research plans in a safe, rigorous, transparent, and timely manner. Be able to set research priorities upon discussions with the PI, and communicate research progress, results, uncertainties and obstacles in a proactive, timely, and organized manner. Be able to operate or quickly learn to operate instruments for materials synthesis, characterization, and reaction studies. In the event of in‑house instrument shutdown or malfunction, be able to perform initial troubleshooting and, if necessary, engage university facility and/or vendor support in a timely manner.
  • 30% – Generate formal technical reports in a rigorous, organized, and timely manner to clearly communicate research ideas and corresponding research results. Be receptive to revisions and suggestions made by coauthors and embrace the fact that good reports often take multiple rounds of careful revisions and proofreading. Support the PI in grant writing.
  • 10% – Serve as a role model for graduate, undergraduate, and high school students working in the labs and offices of the group in the perspectives of time management, support to science and education, experimental operations, and workplace ethics.
  • 10% – Create and maintain a safe working environment for oneself as well as for peer researchers.
Required Skills
  • PhD in engineering or physical science disciplines.
  • Research experience and publication records.
  • Preference for applicants with metallurgy and/or electrochemical experience.
