Research Technician – Biology

About the OpportunityThe Research Technician will assist with research in the Geisinger Lab, investigating the cell biology of the bacterial pathogen, Acinetobacter baumannii, responsible for drug resistant hospital-acquired diseases including sepsis. The research will focus on mechanisms used by the bacteria to control its cell cycle and replicate. This work has the potential to inform the development of new treatments against drug-resistant infections.
The Research Technician will use methods including molecular biology, live‑cell fluorescence microscopy, genomics, and bioinformatics.
- Conduct experimentation necessary to meet the goals of the project, which may include bacterial cell culture, molecular biology, genome editing, next generation DNA sequencing, and live‑cell fluorescence microscopy. Experimentation will be carried out under supervision of the Principal Investigator.
- Assist in experimental design and troubleshooting
- Perform necessary analysis and calculations, and maintain well‑documented laboratory records
- Perform basic lab maintenance tasks such as ordering laboratory reagents and supplies, preparing media solutions, and maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment
- Work closely with participants, graduate students, research technicians, undergraduate research assistants, and other staff members to ensure research protocols are followed. May train and instruct less experienced personnel
- Assist with organizing and drafting material for the preparation of presentations and publications
Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field required. One to two years' experience working in a lab environment. Ability to carefully organize and analyze the data generated from experiments, have excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to carefully follow instructions. Ability to work independently, and cooperatively with others as part of a team. Highly organized, dependable, and skilled in the use of Microsoft Office software.
Effective interpersonal, time management, and solution‑focused skills are required.
