Permanent Scientist – Molecular Genetic Manipulation of Microalgae or Cyanobacteria for Biofuel or Green Chemical Production
Location:
BIAM Institute, Cadarache Centre, Southern France (Provence).
Position:
Permanent scientist in the Bioenergy and Microalgae (EBM) team.
Mission and Activities
The scientist will initiate projects on genetic manipulation of microalgae to introduce novel pathways or improve existing pathways for the production of molecules of interest. Studies will be conducted on the model microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii or other algal or cyanobacterial species proposed by the candidate. Research focus ranges from improving growth and CO2 assimilation to enhancing lipid storage and redirecting carbon flux to boost production of target molecules, within the major mission of the host team.
Responsibilities
- Design and execute genetic engineering, synthetic biology, or genome editing projects on microalgae.
- Generate data, analyze results, and prepare scientific manuscripts.
- Write grant proposals to secure funding.
- Supervise master students, PhD students, and postdocs.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and communicate findings internally and externally.
Qualifications
- PhD with at least one year of postdoctoral experience.
- Strong background in genetic engineering, synthetic biology, or genome editing.
- Experience with microalgae or cyanobacteria is an advantage.
- Proficient in English;
French language learning recommended. - Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Benefits
Net monthly salary: 2,620 € – 3,100 € (depending on postdoctoral experience). 52 days of annual paid holidays, retirement plan, French national social security, free public school system, and international school for foreign children.

Mission
Conduct mechanistic experimental studies enabling quantitative prediction of the impact of lipids, lipid‑based formulations, and diet on the absorption of oral drugs.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and analyze in vitro experiments, including drug dissolution, lipid/protein digestion, and drug absorption in cell culture models.
- Document, analyze, and interpret results, including computational modeling as needed.
- Develop computational models in MATLAB or other programming languages.
- Guide and mentor graduate or undergraduate students.
- Develop and write reports, publications, and grants.
- Attend and participate in research meetings, seminars, and journal clubs.
- Participate in career development training workshops and networking opportunities.
- Foster a safe, collaborative, inclusive environment.
Qualifications
- Experience working with lipids, especially lipid formulations.
- Background in mechanistic drug delivery studies (desired).
- Strong analytical and computational skills.
