The Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) Center for Climate and Health (CCH) invites applications for a Research Fellow to support interdisciplinary initiatives on the health impacts of extreme weather, with an embedded role in the CAFE Research Coordinating Center (CAFE RCC), a major NIH-funded initiative that acts as the coordinating center for health and extreme weather research. CAFE supports the research and practice community by facilitating data sharing, training, mentorship, collaboration, convenings, and sharing of other resources.
The successful candidate will provide key support in research translation, convenings, and project organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with organization, facilitation, and post-event material dissemination of ongoing educational webinars (including but not limited to technical support, blog-post writing, and video editing).
- Support in-person and virtual convenings (half-day conference-like events, in-person symposiums), including recruitment and coordination of speakers, organization of agenda and submissions, and facilitation of events.
- Facilitate workshops and other research translation efforts of our Resource Function team.
- Provide additional administrative support to CAFE teams, which may include: meeting management, working group coordination, submission and application review, communications materials generation, presentation assembly, among other activities.
- Assist in logistical implementation of pilot and other funding mechanisms.
CAFE RCC
Activities:
- Support development and coordination of the CAFE community of practice, convening researchers, agencies, and partners across disciplines with a focus on convenings, collaboration-building, and administrative support.
- Contribute to CAFE communications and other content, including resources that will be added to our Educational Resources Hub.
- Engage in training, workshops, and capacity-building activities.
- Facilitate collaboration and research translation across the CAFE community of practice and the extreme weather and health field.
Required Skills:
- MPH, MS, or similar graduate degree OR Bachelors and 3-5 years of related experience
- Strong communication and writing skills
- Strong organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience organizing larger events/meetings
- Knowledge of environmental/climate health
- Background in science communications, management, policy, or environmental health.
Please note, this position will not include data analysis beyond Excel basics and is likely not appropriate for graduates looking for an epidemiology/biostatistics role.
Research Environment
The Center for Climate and Health is a convergent science hub linking environmental health, epidemiology, data science, and policy. The Research Fellow will work within a highly collaborative ecosystem and be nested within the NIH-funded CAFE RCC, which convenes and accelerates a global community of practice for health and extreme weather research, supporting data sharing, training, and collaborative science.
The Research Fellow will report directly to the Program Managers for CAFE (Elaine Bertolini and Lilly Nichols), and the Multiple Program Investigator for CAFE out of BU:
Gregory Wellenius. This position is a full-time appointment, through May 2027, with continuation beyond that contingent upon the availability of external research funding.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit:
- Cover letter describing professional interests/experience and alignment with CAFE
- Curriculum vitae
- Contact information for 2-3 references
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
