The Charles lab focuses on reducing the global burden of mucosal and enteric infections affecting resource-poor and marginalized populations. Research aims include understanding host-pathogen and immune responses during human infection by V. cholerae and Salmonella Typhi/Paratyphi A, identifying immunogenic antigens or molecular signatures for vaccine and diagnostic development, and developing rapid diagnostic and seroepidemiologic tools for use in resource-limited settings. The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to research investigations, program administration, supervision, staff training, and grant writing.

Responsibilities
  • Research:
    Contribute directly to ongoing projects; lead scientific analysis, abstract submissions, and manuscript development for 1-2 projects at a time.
  • Research Program Management:
    Assist PI with managing the Charles lab research portfolio by coordinating priorities, deadlines, and workload within a group of ongoing projects.
  • Supervise research staff:
    Provide new employee training, day-to-day oversight and direction, and assistance with recruiting.
  • Ensure research integrity:
    Data documentation, data management, and training to promote best practices and adherence.
  • Grant activities:
    Manage and participate in collaborative grant-writing projects.
  • Collaboration:

    Serve as a liaison among team members at US and international research sites.
Qualifications
  • PhD in immunology, infection biology, or related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in an academic, research, or related setting.
  • Experience in flow cytometry.
  • Experience in immunological assays (e.g., ELISA, multiplex-bead based assays).
  • Strong track record of publications.

Working Conditions & Location

Duties will be carried out in a typical lab environment. Occasional evening or weekend work and occasional travel to international research sites may be required. There is also the opportunity to travel to scientific meetings to present research.

Supervisory Responsibility

The candidate will provide daily supervision, guidance, and expertise for 2-3 Research Technician/Assistants or students.
