Position: Laboratory Technician I

General Summary

The incumbent of this position will serve as a Laboratory Technician and will be responsible for performing laboratory work associated with reagent preparation, apparatus and materials set up as part of the academic lab courses. Other tasks related to this role include establishing and maintaining a well-organized lab environment and weekly preparation of media for Drosophila colony maintenance.

Examples of Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: reagent preparation and testing, equipment calibration, feeding and maintaining animal colonies, assisting with maintaining and organizing lab equipment, records and supplies, assisting laboratory coordinator and teaching assistants with troubleshooting aspects associated with laboratory exercises, presenting experimental results, washing and autoclaving of lab items, and ensuring that safe laboratory practice is followed.

Qualifications

A BS in the biology or a related field is preferred. The successful candidate will have basic laboratory experience and be comfortable with general lab techniques and/or ample laboratory course work in both general biology and zoology. With a working lab knowledge of two or more of the following areas: cell biology, botany, ecology, and zoology. Attention to detail and good record-keeping skills, strong written and oral communication skills, and computer literacy (especially Microsoft Excel).

Must also have the ability to follow oral and written instructions and the ability to work well with others. Must be able to handle supplies and items of up to 30 lbs.

Pay and Benefits

Grade: 14 Hourly Rate: $28.05

This is a non-exempt union position.
