Position Overview

The Emerging Climate tech Fellow will be a part of the Emerging Climate tech (ECT) division, working to support the growth of the Massachusetts clean energy economy and position the Commonwealth as a global leader in clean energy and climate tech innovation. The Emerging Climate tech team includes three functional teams: the Technology-to-Market grant program team, the Business Development Support team, and the Investments team.

ECT is charged with understanding the market ecosystem for clean energy and climate tech sectors, recognizing and supporting emerging technologies and market opportunities, identifying market trends and barriers, and supporting startup companies’ growth in the Commonwealth. Primary work will fall under the Technology-to-Market team, which oversees a suite of grant programs to help researchers and start-up companies develop and commercialize their clean energy technologies and to help organizations that support early-stage companies (i.e., incubators and accelerators).

However, work has the ability span all functions of ECT. The Fellow is an important contributor to the team’s day-to-day operations.

The Fellow will assist ECT with project tracking and management, communication with internal and external stakeholders, program administration, research and analysis activities, and event planning and logistics. The Fellow will contribute to program team meetings; collect and analyze project metrics; perform background research on technologies, companies, or initiatives; and may present results to the team and/or broader organization. The fellow will support prospecting and outreach to climate tech companies and new industry partners.

The Fellow will have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the energy and climate tech industry, including identifying market strengths and weaknesses of proposed new technologies; to write about and present research results; and to network with clean energy and climate tech industry stakeholders.

The fellowship program at MassCEC includes various educational and networking opportunities, including:

  • In-depth overview presentations from division heads;
  • Tech Talks and Brown Bag Presentations;
  • Site visits to incubators, research labs, and testing centers;
  • Attend relevant climate tech conferences; and
  • Other industry related events.
Job Duties
  • Work as part of a team on projects and programs to help promote the commercialization of clean energy technology developed by Massachusetts startups and researchers, primarily focusing on Innovate Mass and Business Development initiatives such as the Climate tech Tax Incentive Program, however work may extend to support the entire Emerging Climate tech suite, if need arises.
  • Track tasks as part of a project, draft meeting notes and memos, research, data entry, create targeted reports and marketing materials, draft memos and letters, work with others to create graphics and maps, update websites.
  • Monitor program inboxes, respond to external and internal inquirers.
  • Review applicant proposals, maintain ownership over program databases and tracking systems, and assist with scheduling meetings and events.
  • Review and process awardee invoices, track metrics of awardees and maintain ownership over related databases.
  • Conduct research and analysis on specific topics/issues related to clean energy technology commercialization and reduction of industry market barriers.
