APIs have quietly become the plumbing of the AI economy - every agent, every integration, every product built on an LLM has to talk to somebody's API, and right now most companies' API estates are a mess.
That's the gap this business exists to close, and it's working: this VC-backed API infrastructure company has doubled headcount in the past year, sits on $5-10M in annual revenue, and is tracking toward a Series B.
Its net revenue retention is 130% - top 5% of startups on that metric and its enterprise customers, mostly Fortune 500 and category-leading tech names, rarely leave. You'd be the first person hired to own what happens after the sale.
Why this role:- A proven path to Head of Function - the current Head of Customer Success joined as a senior individual contributor and was promoted into running the team; prove yourself here and the same door is open to you.
- You're the founding hire, not employee #47 - you'll build the account planning, Q , and renewal playbook from scratch, and it'll carry your fingerprints for years.
- Numbers that sell themselves - 130% net revenue retention and 94% gross retention, on infrastructure customers can't easily rip out.
- Enterprise logos, real budgets - a book weighted toward Fortune 500 and top-tier tech accounts, with deals ranging from $80K to $600K+.
- A real seat at the table - your voice-of-customer feedback goes straight to Product and Engineering, and shapes what gets built next.
- Own a portfolio of enterprise accounts - accountable for renewals and net dollar retention against clear targets.
- Hunt inside the existing customer base for new teams, use cases, and budget, the way an AE hunts new territory.
- Run QBRs that prove ROI with data and tie the roadmap to each customer's long-term plans.
- Build multi-threaded relationships, from platform engineers up to the economic buyer.
- Track usage and engagement signals so you catch renewal risk months out, not weeks.
- Partner closely with Customer Success (who own satisfaction, not revenue) and feed customer insight back to Product.
- 5+ years in account management, expansion sales, or strategic customer success at a B2B SaaS company (dev tools or infrastructure a strong plus).
- A track record owning a $5M+ book of business with 110%+ net dollar retention or equivalent.
- Comfort selling to and negotiating with technical buyers - engineers, architects, CTOs and translating that into terms a CFO or procurement team will sign off on.
- Experience negotiating multi-year enterprise renewals, including pricing and legal cycles.
** The role is fully remote with a strong preference for the East Coast - ideally New York, where you can work alongside the team in person if you want to. On top of that: discretionary PTO, healthcare, dental and vision cover, and company retreats that bring the team together in person.
