Job Overview
The Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is seeking an Aquatic Biologist II (Aquaculture Specialist) for the Shellfish Program in New Bedford. This role supports the Shellfish Program and Aquaculture Project by investigating combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges in Buzzards Bay, conducting field investigations, and providing data analysis to inform harvest closure decisions and industry compliance.
Responsibilities- Investigate combined sewer overflow discharges in Buzzards Bay, including:
- Collect wastewater samples from outfall pipes during substantial rain and discharge events
- Collect shellfish samples to reopen areas closed due to discharge events
- Conduct studies and deploy equipment to assess impacts on Shellfish Growing Areas
- Operate vessels and various scientific equipment
- Assist the New Bedford shellfish laboratory with biological, microbiological and chemical analysis as needed
- Be available for regular weekend work as required
- Collaborate with the project leader in managing the Division’s Shellfish Aquaculture Project, including:
- Working closely with the DMF Aquaculture Project leader to develop new policies and regulations concerning aquaculture
- Planning and conducting proposed aquaculture site surveys and coordinating with DMF dive program staff
- Responding to information requests and technical assistance from the public, municipalities, and other agencies regarding aquaculture matters
- Auditing aquaculture sites to ensure compliance with state regulations, permit conditions, and NSSP guidelines
- Preparing content for the Shellfish Program annual report
- Research shellfish biology, aquaculture, shellfish diseases, and fisheries management at local, state, and national levels under the supervisor’s direction
- Assist in industry training (presentations) and represent the DMF Aquaculture Project at public meetings and outreach events
- Organize, record, and maintain data, including computer coding and data entry for analysis; prepare graphical presentations and reports on aquaculture statistics
- Operate and maintain field equipment, including motor vehicles, small craft, trailers, sampling gear, and aquaculture/propagation equipment
- Train new employees in the use of field equipment, safety procedures, boat operation, and navigation
- Maintain collaborative and harmonious working relationships with colleagues, demonstrating professionalism in words and actions
- Assist other Marine Fisheries projects in monitoring and research when time allows
- Knowledge of shellfish biology and management
- Knowledge of shellfish aquaculture techniques
- Knowledge of shellfish disease and pathology screening methods
- Ability to operate small vessels under challenging conditions
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work flexible hours and days, including weekends, depending on tide schedule, significant rain events, and other contingencies
- Working knowledge of NSSP requirements
- Thorough knowledge of M.G.L. c. 130 and 322 CMR as required for shellfish management
- Develop skills associated with compiling and analyzing shellfish landings reported to the SAFIS Data Base
- Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s Class D license or equivalent license from the state of residence
