Join the Public Safety team at Tufts Medical Center and play an essential role in supporting a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, employees, and the community within a leading academic medical center. Public Safety Officers are responsible for maintaining a visible presence throughout the hospital, responding to incidents and emergencies, assisting with de‑escalation efforts, and supporting daily hospital operations with professionalism, strong communication, and customer service.
Our Public Safety team works closely with clinical and operational departments across the organization and plays a critical part in ensuring a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment throughout the hospital campus.
Full-Time Positions Available- Day Shift: 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM
- Evening Shift: 2:00 PM - 10:30 PM
- Overnight Shift: 10:00 PM - 6:30 AM
- 24 Hours/Week – Day Shift (Weekday) 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM
- 16 Hours/Week – Evening Shift (Weekday) 2:00 PM - 10:30 PM
- 16 Hours/Week – Overnight Shift (Weekday) 10:00 PM - 6:30 AM
This role focuses on preventing workplace accidents and promotes health and safety awareness and education to individuals within the organization. The majority of time is spent delivering support services under supervision, requiring routine and standard procedures and minimal prior experience.
Job OverviewUnder general supervision of the supervisor, perform all duties and responsibilities related to the day‑to‑day protection and security of hospital assets and information as well as the safety of all persons on hospital property. Conduct proactive patrols of all hospital buildings and grounds to prevent fire, theft, vandalism, illegal entry, and bodily harm. Serve as the immediate first responder to crisis situations daily and document all safety and security incidents in accordance with department policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Valid state‑issued driver’s license.
- Possess IAHSS Basic certification as a Healthcare Security Officer within 1 year of hire. Incumbents as of 9/1/2025 will have 1 year from 9/1/2025 to obtain IAHSS Basic Healthcare Security Officer certification.
- Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice or related area.
- Experience in military, security, or police.
- Security or first responder certifications such as de‑escalation/crisis response, CPR/AED, Stop the Bleed, or Nasal Naloxone Certification.
- Graduate of an approved law enforcement training program or Police Academy and possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid POST Certification from the Commonwealth of MA.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid MA License to Carry Firearms.
- Perform basic public safety and security duties, including internal and external patrols of all facilities and grounds.
- Respond to and report on routine and emergency calls for service, building alarms, restraint of violent patients and/or visitors, and monitor areas for suspicious activity.
- Provide escort services to patients, visitors, staff and others in accordance with established procedures.
- Identify security vulnerabilities, safety hazards and violations of hospital policy, take corrective action when possible, and collaborate with other departments to address or resolve them.
- Take appropriate actions during patient‑crisis interventions to achieve the safest possible outcomes using the least invasive measures.
- Ensure all employees and community members possess a visible hospital identification badge; engage those without badges in a courteous manner.
- Grant access to authorized staff holding a valid hospital badge; restrict access to unauthorized individuals according to policies.
- Maintain composure under stressful circumstances using trained intervention skills, including verbal and non‑verbal de‑escalation strategies.
- Provide excellent customer service to patients, visitors and staff, conveying dignity, respect, courtesy and professionalism.
