Under the general supervision of a Lieutenant, the Sergeant plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe and secure environment for the campus community. The Sergeant oversees officers and civilian staff, manages patrol operations, enforces departmental orders and state laws, and mentors subordinates.

Job Duties
  • Manage daily patrol operations to ensure the safety and security of the campus environment.
  • Observe and evaluate the performance of team members, providing mentorship as needed and recognizing commendable actions and behaviors.
  • Conduct shift change roll calls to ensure all officers are properly equipped and informed about their duties, special orders, and other relevant information.
  • Successfully address a broad range of issues using sound judgment and discretion, ensuring effective crisis management and conflict resolution.
  • Proactively identify persistent challenges and recommend new procedures or protocol adjustments to enhance department operations.
  • Assume the responsibilities of Shift Commander in the absence of a Lieutenant, ensuring continuity of leadership and operational integrity.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor to both subordinates and peers, fostering a culture of professionalism and ethical behavior.
  • Implement the College's emergency preparedness plan during disasters and other significant incidents, coordinating response efforts to maintain campus safety.
  • Participate in campus safety programs and collaborate closely with Emerson community members, groups, and other college departments to address public safety concerns.
  • Act as a liaison with other public safety agencies and the court system, enhancing communication and collaborative efforts to improve overall public safety.
Qualifications
  • Three years of policing experience, preferably in a campus setting.
  • Graduated from a full‑time police recruit training academy accredited by the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council or the Massachusetts State Police Academy for campus police officers. Graduates from out‑of‑state academies or the Massachusetts Reserve Intermittent Training Academy with MPTC Basic Training Exemption will also be considered.
  • Valid Massachusetts driver's license and insurable by the College’s automobile liability insurer.
  • Successful completion of annual fitness‑for‑duty assessment, including background investigation, psychological evaluation, and medical release.
  • Meet April1,2020 State Police requirements for obtaining Special State Police Officer powers as listed in 515 CMR
    5.04.
  • Meet POST Standards for police certification.

Physical Abilities

  • Access all facilities on foot, including uppermost floors when elevators are unavailable.
  • Conduct visual surveillance of individuals and surroundings.
  • Operate department equipment.
  • Work in elements, severe weather, loud noises; expose to dust, oils, chemicals, fumes, hazardous driving conditions, moving mechanical parts, electric shock, confined spaces, bodily fluids.
  • Wear required uniform.
Work Environment
  • Indoors and outdoors, moderate to extreme temperatures, inclement weather.
  • Moderate noise levels; occasional exposure to loud noise.
  • Potential exposure to dust, oils, chemicals, fumes, hazardous driving, mechanical parts, electric shock.
  • Possibility of confined spaces and bodily fluid exposure.
  • Work different shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.

Compensation
