The position is responsible for leading assigned staff in day‑to‑day protection and safety of patients, staff, and visitors, as well as the security of hospital assets and information. Responsibilities include proactive patrols of hospital buildings and grounds, responding to crisis situations, documenting incidents, and providing training and guidance to assigned staff.
Minimum Qualifications- Associate degree in Criminal Justice or related area and two (2) years of experience as a public safety officer or related position OR High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of experience as a public safety officer or related position.
- Valid state issued driver’s license.
- Possesses IAHSS Basic, Advanced, and Supervisory Healthcare Security Officer Certifications within six months of hire. Incumbents as of 9/1/2025 will have one year from 9/1/2025 to obtain the required certifications.
- Associate degree in criminal justice or related area.
- Two (2) years of healthcare security experience.
- Security or first responder certifications such as de‑escalation/crisis response, CPR/AED, Stop the Bleed, or Nasal Naloxone Certification.
- Graduate of an approved law enforcement training program or Police Academy and possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid POST Certification from the Commonwealth of MA.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid MA License to Carry Firearms.
- Lead a team of officers and staff in day‑to‑day operations and emergency situations, providing leadership, guidance, and assignment of duties on shift.
- Monitor staff activity; coach, counsel and commend employees on performance matters. Ensure compliance with policies and guidelines and recommend corrective action.
- Perform public safety and security duties, including internal and external patrols of all facilities and grounds. Respond to routine and emergency calls, building alarms, and suspicious activity.
- When licensed as a Special State Police Officer, make appropriate arrests, enforce state laws, and handle booking, arraignment, and court prosecution procedures.
- Identify security vulnerabilities and safety hazards, take corrective action, and collaborate with other departments to resolve issues.
- Assist with patient crisis interventions using least invasive measures.
- Ensure all employees and community members possess a visible hospital identification badge and enforce access control policies.
- Maintain composure under stressful circumstances, employing de‑escalation strategies and approaches.
- Provide customer service and assistance to patients, visitors, and staff with dignity and professionalism.
- Participate in investigations, review recorded video, prepare case files, and secure evidence.
- Aid in emergencies and disasters, including crowd control and evacuations.
- Resolve problems and conflicts impartially, obtaining facts and communicating to supervision when necessary.
- Prepare accurate incident reports and collaborate with supervisors when warranted.
- Foster positive working relationships with peers and colleagues to achieve group goals.
- Conduct formal training for current and newly hired staff and complete all required training.
- Frequent standing and walking for eight (8) hours; ability to stand and/or walk throughout the shift.
- Climb multiple flights of stairs.
- Lift up to fifty (50) pounds alone.
- Wear personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves, or eye protection as required.
