Position: Public Safety Officer-7

Position Summary

Provides services as a Public Safety Officer within BMC Department of Public Safety to deliver police, security, parking, transportation, and control center services as necessary. Ensures consistent and safe service delivery throughout the medical center involving all member institutions. Utilizes the medical center’s core values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the medical center’s mission.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties
  • Perform daily operational functions as requested by the Public Safety Supervisor or the Public Safety Desk Officer to meet BMC’s operational needs efficiently.
  • Respond immediately and appropriately to all stat requests for assistance, emergency, contingency, or disaster situations, and all calls assigned by the Public Safety Desk Officer.
  • Document all incidents, complete incident reports objectively with clear and legible writing, and submit all reports and documentation to the Public Safety Desk Officer before departing from BUMC.
  • Use strong customer service skills and community policing philosophies to build relationships with the community served.
  • Manage complex, dynamic, and emotionally charged situations to restore order, investigate suspicious or criminal activity, and take appropriate safety, security, or police actions.
  • Investigate reports of suspicious activity, hazards, or risk; mitigate risk to patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Conduct investigations of larceny, burglary, threats, assault, and other nefarious activity, including evidence preservation, witness interviews, victim assistance, suspect interrogation, and documentation.
  • Apply de‑escalation techniques to address disorderly or emotionally charged individuals.
  • Use physical force when necessary to contain, restrain, arrest, or stop physical threats or assaults.
  • Provide escorts to patients, visitors, employees, staff, and students in accordance with BMC policies and procedures.
  • Provide cash transfer escorts throughout BMC upon request.
  • Patrol BMC property and grounds, documenting deficiencies and violations of policy.
  • Ensure authorized vehicles access parking areas controlled by BMC and document parking policy violations.
  • Perform duties as a Special Police Officer in accordance with regulations.
  • Provide access control to ensure persons and property entering or exiting BMC comply with policies; check identification, challenge without visible , enforce age or area restrictions, issue passes to vendor representatives, inspect material leaving the property, and restrict unauthorized access.
  • Provide information to patients, visitors, employees, staff, and students in a friendly, courteous, and helpful manner.
  • Coordinate all activities of Public Safety, Parking, and Transportation Services during non‑business hours, act as liaison to other BMC departments and external agencies, and maintain a professional attitude.
  • Coordinate post assignments of scheduled staff equitably.
  • Prioritize and assign responses to incidents and assistance requests, ensuring timely resolution.
  • Maintain chain of custody for all property, evidence, and equipment at the main Public Safety desk.
  • Document all actions taken by departmental staff, incidents reported, and ensure supporting documentation is provided by responders.
  • Monitor all electronic security systems at the main Public Safety desk in accordance with department policies and procedures.
  • Page the Supervisor when appropriate for additional resources or system failures.
  • Perform all services in accordance with appropriate BMC Policy and Procedure Manual.
Job Requirements
  • Education:

    HS Diploma required; A.S. in Criminal Justice or equivalent preferred.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: CPR certification; legal ability to operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts.
  • Experience:

    6 months to 1 year preferred in security and customer service.

    Skills:

    Detailed in responsibilities and duties.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary Range: $27.77 – $28.32 per hour (based on minimum qualifications). Final compensation considers education, experience, and licensure/certifications.
