Overview
Incumbents of positions in this series maintain buildings and related structures applying carpentry techniques and using carpentry tools to construct, alter, repair and/or install walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, etc. This work involves inspecting buildings to determine the need for carpentry repairs or alterations; interpreting and drawing sketches or layouts of work to be done; erecting and dismantling staging and scaffolding;
and performing related work as required.
- Maintain buildings and related structures by constructing, altering, repairing, and installing walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, roofs, gutters, locks, air conditioners, mail slots, handicapped chair rails, ramps, shelving, etc.
- Inspect buildings to determine need for carpentry repair or alterations.
- Estimate job duration and cost and/or quantities of labor and materials needed.
- Report results of inspections to those who have complained of unsafe conditions or requested alteration work.
- Interpret and draw sketches, patterns, blueprints, instructions, and layouts of work to be done.
- Perform structural repair, alteration or improvement work such as lowering ceilings and paneling rooms; preparing surfaces for plaster or cement; studding, wiring, plastering walls and cracks; taping joints on sheetrock; pre-cementing and/or replacing formica tops.
- Confere with unit control section and various department heads or supervisors regarding handling emergencies, feasibility of performing repair alterations, and scheduling of work.
- Perform related work such as framing pictures; making window and door screens; drilling holes in signs; ordering materials and supplies; cleaning; sharpening and tempering tools and equipment.
- Provide instructions for subordinates regarding handling emergencies, feasibility of performing repair or alteration, and scheduling of work.
