Electrical Systems Technician I
The Electrical Systems Technician I plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Museum’s electrical infrastructure and related building systems. The role supports the Facilities team by diagnosing system issues, performing preventative and corrective maintenance, and coordinating contractor work to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for staff, guests, and animals across the Museum’s campus.
Within the Museum of Science, the Facilities team manages complex building systems, campus infrastructure, and capital improvements. The Electrical Systems Technician I is responsible for keeping the Museum’s more than 750,000 square feet of facilities operational and safe.
What You’ll Accomplish- Maintain Reliable Electrical Infrastructure: Monitor, diagnose, and implement corrective actions for building electrical systems—including switch gear, transformers, generators, UPS systems, distribution panels, and life safety systems—to ensure reliable operation.
- Execute Preventative and Corrective Maintenance: Complete work orders efficiently and perform preventative maintenance on electrical and related mechanical systems to minimize downtime.
- Support Continuous Facility Operations: Conduct daily rounds of critical infrastructure, respond to operational issues, and assist with system adjustments or modifications that improve equipment reliability, safety, and performance.
- Coordinate and Oversee Contractor Work: Oversee external contractors performing electrical or mechanical work to ensure compliance with Museum standards and uninterrupted facility operations.
- Respond to Emergencies and Critical Incidents: Provide rapid response to emergencies such as power failures, fire alarms, equipment failures, or building evacuations.
- Maintain building infrastructure in an educational, institutional, industrial, or similar environment.
- Electrical Systems Expertise: Knowledge of electrical distribution systems up to 480 V, including switch gear, motor control centers, transformers, generators, UPS systems, and automatic transfer switches.
- Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Ability to analyze electrical and building systems problems using schematics, diagrams, and diagnostic tools.
- Operational Reliability: Conduct preventive maintenance and system monitoring to ensure critical infrastructure remains reliable and safe.
- Collaboration: Works effectively with facilities staff, contractors, and cross‑departmental teams.
- Safety & Compliance Awareness: Understanding of life safety systems, electrical safety practices, and regulatory requirements relevant to institutional facilities.
- Massachusetts Licensed Electrician OR completion of required classroom hours with the ability to obtain an Electrical License within 18 months of employment.
- Experience maintaining building electrical distribution systems (up to 480 V).
- Experience with generators, UPS systems, fire alarm systems, and motor control equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and diagrams.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, diagnostic equipment, ladders, and maintenance equipment.
- Post‑secondary electrician training.
- Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS).
- Experience with Johnson Controls Metasys or similar systems.
- Knowledge of mechanical systems and life safety systems.
