About the RoleAs an Electric Utility Substation Operating Mechanic Apprentice, employees engage in an on-the-job training program designed to provide the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to perform all required operations and maintenance activities within substations, network stations, subsurface and indoor vaults as well as customer substations. Training is conducted in the field and in the classroom (classroom training is held at our Wareham, MA location).
Successful apprentices will utilize their strong mechanical aptitude and technical troubleshooting skills to resolve equipment issues and support daily operations.
- Perform standardized or prescribed assignments involving a sequence of related operations for the purpose of learning standard work methods and to develop work knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Perform all phases of substation operations and maintenance on 4 to 345 kV electrical equipment, as well as DC and other auxiliary control systems.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems, read and understand schematics, electrical one-line, and control wiring diagrams.
- Assist in the performance of various tests with Field Engineering and other crafts, where required.
- Perform switching and tagging on equipment at all voltages as directed by the system operator or supervisors in accordance with established Eversource procedures.
- Perform monthly inspections and gather all necessary data for the generation of reports and updating records.
- Make repairs and corrections on any abnormal findings.
- Maintain substation logs and equipment records.
- Under close directive or general supervision, use appropriate hand and power tools to perform tasks in connection with the above activities, without limitation to the operating voltage.
- Perform emergency response assignments as required.
- Must have two years of mechanical, electrical, or related technical experience (or a combination of technical education and work experience).
- Electrical license is highly desired.
- Experience in multidisciplinary trades, including foundational knowledge across various construction and mechanical disciplines, is preferred.
- Demonstrated mechanical inclination with a desire to learn equipment operation and maintenance.
- Must have corrective vision, normal color perception, hearing, and sense of smell.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license to operate motor vehicles and have a satisfactory driving record.
- Must possess or be willing and able to obtain the appropriate Massachusetts license and company qualification to operate motor vehicles of any class and type required by the company.
- Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, with the ability to learn advanced troubleshooting.
- Must have a history of safe working habits.
- Must pass company-approved EEI testing (CAST Test).
- Must successfully complete a physical aptitude exam including tool identification, fuses/wiring tasks, and lifting/carrying a weighted object.
- High school education or equivalent (GED) required. Advanced education is preferred.
- DOT Medical Certification or ability to obtain one within three months of hire.
- Union represented position.
Starting rate of pay: $40.44 per hour. Over a three-year apprenticeship program, pay increases at every qualifying level until you are fully qualified: $40.44 – $43.48 – $45.76 – $47.87 – $50.71 – $54.00 – $57.04 – $60.88.
Working Conditions- Ability and willingness to perform heavy physical work indoors and outdoors in all seasons and at times for extended periods.
- Work in confined spaces and at heights up to 60 feet.
- Shifts are required.
